Bright yellow with a sun-like appearance, the field of sunflowers seem to emit a feeling of optimism and warmth as you walk along paths through the field at the Maki Pumpkin farm east of Wallace. The flowers enjoy the bright sunlight and follow the sun throughout the day.
The farm also sells pumpkins, squash and other vegetables as well as corn stalks.

“Shop and Save the Horvath Way” the awning on the Horvath Family Food Store advertised when it was located next to the Gambles Store on Railroad Street in Stephenson. The store was built in 1941 and remodeled in 1956. The family built a new 4,600 square foot store on Samuel Street next to the Stephenson Post Office in 1967. The Horvath family retired and the store was operated for a number of years by other owners. The Store later closed and the building was sold at auction and is now called the Storehouse Community Center and houses the Mid-County Food Pantry, Izzie’s Coffee Shop, Stephenson Karate Club and is also used for community events. The original Horvath’s store building was later purchased by the owners of the Gambles store and remodeled into one building. The combined Gambles and Horvath store building is now for sale.

Community members and friends of Tom and Zoe Takahashi joined the couple to help celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of Daisy Dreams in Stephenson Sept. 20. The business is located in the former Kelly’s Alteration portion of the Anderson Milk Transit building. Zoe’s desire is to serve the community with a place for women to gather to share knowledge and fellowship while sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, scrap booking or crafting. “I hope this will be a place where friendships are made and projects begin,” Zoe said. She will also offer quilting and other classes as well as equipment rental.

An aerial photo shows a fire of undetermined origin in 1976 that burned over 300 acres of a blueberry marsh just off Co. Rd. G-12 east of Stephenson. Floyd Patz, 46, a Menominee-Ingallston Township Volunteer Firefighter, died after becoming overcome by smoke and suffering a subsequent heart attack. At the right in the photo is the Jimtown Road residence of the late Roy Hubbard. Most of the area affected by the fire belonged to the state except for 15 acres owned by Hubbard. At one point on the second day of the fire, it was felt that the blaze was contained. However, the wind picked up and the fire jumped the road in three places thus involving the land on both sides of G-12. The late James Noasconi, DNR Fire Supervisor at Stephenson at the time of the fire, said the bog-like conditions of the area made the fire extremely difficult to contain. The fire continued to smolder from underground for weeks after the fire until winter set in. Over 200 volunteers were involved in the fire which started Sept. 16. Students from the Stephenson High School Forestry and Conservation classes were released from school to help fight the fire along with fire departments from all over the county.
