WHERE NO HUMAN CAN REMAIN HUMAN
Second Annual Summer Blockbuster Movie Showcase continues with the original 1968 science-fiction classic “PLANET OF THE APES” at the historic Cliftex Theatre in Clifton Tuesday, June 16
“I can't help thinking that somewhere in the universe there has to be something better than man.”
The Bosque Film Society hosts 10 movies free-to-the-public during its Second Annual SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE SHOWCASE presented every Tuesday at 6 p.m. all summer long running June 9-August 11 – continues with the 1968 science-fiction original classic “PLANET OF THE APES” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 at The Cliftex Theatre in Clifton, sponsored by Andrew & Lauren Mathews.
Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, loosely based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, “PLANET OF THE APES” stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly and Linda Harrison.
After being kept in hypersleep during a long expedition into deep space, an astronaut crew crash-lands in the 40th century on a planet where highly intelligent non-human ape species are dominant and humans are enslaved.
Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute primitives wearing animal skins.
“PLANET OF THE APES” proved to be a massive box-office hit, one of the highest-grossing films of 1968 and launched one of Hollywood's most successful, enduring franchises. Highly acclaimed for its groundbreaking prosthetic makeup techniques, the film earned an honorary Academy Award for artist John Chambers, alongside nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.
The film's iconic twist ending and thought-provoking social allegory made it one of the most talked-about movies of the late 1960s, quickly spawning four sequels, television series, and a massive multi-media franchise.
Established in 2020, Bosque Film Society is a non-profit organization focused on promoting film appreciation, education and production in Bosque County, Texas, while serving as the "Friends of The Cliftex Theatre," the longest continuously-operating movie theater in Texas, showing films on the silver screen since 1916.
