“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."

More than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, on June 19, 1865, Union troops traveled to Galveston, Texas with word of slavery's end. An annual celebration of the date — known as — took root in Black communities across the state.

America's "second independence day" became a federal holiday in 2021, the first since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was designated in 1983.

WHERE NO HUMAN CAN REMAIN HUMAN
Second Annual Summer Blockbuster Movie Showcase continues with the original 1968 science-fiction classic “PLANET OF THE APES” at the historic Cliftex Theatre in Clifton Tuesday, June 16

“I can't help thinking that somewhere in the universe there has to be something better than man.”

The Bosque Film Society hosts 10 movies free-to-the-public during its Second Annual SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE SHOWCASE presented every Tuesday at 6 p.m. all summer long running June 9-August 11 – continues with the 1968 science-fiction original classic “PLANET OF THE APES” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 at The Cliftex Theatre in Clifton, sponsored by Andrew & Lauren Mathews.

Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Michael Wilson and Rod Serling, loosely based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, “PLANET OF THE APES” stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, James Whitmore, James Daly and Linda Harrison.

After being kept in hypersleep during a long expedition into deep space, an astronaut crew crash-lands in the 40th century on a planet where highly intelligent non-human ape species are dominant and humans are enslaved.

Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute primitives wearing animal skins.

“PLANET OF THE APES” proved to be a massive box-office hit, one of the highest-grossing films of 1968 and launched one of Hollywood's most successful, enduring franchises. Highly acclaimed for its groundbreaking prosthetic makeup techniques, the film earned an honorary Academy Award for artist John Chambers, alongside nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score.

The film's iconic twist ending and thought-provoking social allegory made it one of the most talked-about movies of the late 1960s, quickly spawning four sequels, television series, and a massive multi-media franchise.

Established in 2020, Bosque Film Society is a non-profit organization focused on promoting film appreciation, education and production in Bosque County, Texas, while serving as the "Friends of The Cliftex Theatre," the longest continuously-operating movie theater in Texas, showing films on the silver screen since 1916.

Tune in Wednesday afternoon during the 4 o’clock hour of NPR‘s All Things Considered for a special tribute broadcast honoring the late Dr. T. Lindsay Baker.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, the first Endowed Chair of Texas Industrial History, founding Director of the W. K. Gordon Center, and longtime Tarleton State University professor.

Dr. Baker was instrumental in preserving the history of Thurber and ensuring that its story as a company town and center of Texas industrial life would not be forgotten. His vision, leadership, and passion helped shape the W. K. Gordon Center into a place where that history continues to live and be shared.

He was known for his deep and remarkable knowledge of Texas history, particularly his pioneering work on historic windmills, earning him recognition as one of the leading authorities in the field. More importantly, he had a gift for bringing history to life and inspiring others to care about it as much as he did.

The loss of his knowledge, his curiosity, and his enthusiasm for telling the stories of Texas is truly immeasurable. His legacy will live on through the museum, the preservation of Thurber, and the many lives he influenced along the way.

Our hearts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

At this time, his family has asked for privacy and time to process his loss.

For those wishing to share their condolences, we will share additional information as it becomes available.

Congratulations Texans!

City of Granbury

Drivers have noticed significant traffic backups this week at the traffic signal on U.S. 377 at Old Acton Highway.

City of Granbury staff and the Granbury Police Department have been in contact with TxDOT regarding the issue. According to TxDOT, new signals were recently installed and activated, but the radar vehicle-detection equipment has not yet been installed. As a result, the signal is currently operating on a temporary timing system that is not responding to actual traffic conditions.

The timing of the left-turn movement onto Old Acton Highway is creating longer delays for through traffic on U.S. 377, especially during busy periods.

After hearing concerns from the City, TxDOT contacted its district office and contractor to address the problem. The City of Granbury has been informed that the contractor will need to return to install the radar equipment, and TxDOT is working to have the correction completed as quickly as possible. At this time, the work is expected to take place during the week of June 15.

The City understands the delays have been frustrating, particularly with increased traffic expected this weekend, and we appreciate everyone's patience while the necessary adjustments are made. The City will continue working with TxDOT and will share updates as they become available.
