A note from jonny:

I've spent nearly every waking moment of my free time this month carefully drumming up over 11,000 words for 'City Limits: Fogworld vol. 2.' This section (four chapters!) has been in my head since I had the idea for Fogworld in 2014. It took 150,000 words and four years to get to it. What were you doing back then? Yeah, I agree; it's crazy to think about. And now it's done and I just uploaded it to my Patreon. If you read Wandering City Blues and want to catch up on the new book, it's all yours for $3 a month (link below). There's a chance I'll finish the manuscript in December, but remember this day - October 13, 2018, I sealed the deal on an idea I've had in my sights and wanted to share with you for over 1,400 days.

I love you all. Thanks for supporting Fogworld.

A spoiler-free note from jonny:

Hey friends! This month is a really nerve-wracking one for me as an author. Between now and Halloween, I’m writing something in particular for my next book. My next book is City Limits, a direct sequel to Wandering City Blues and the 2nd in my ongoing sci-fi/spec fiction novel series Fogworld.

So what? Well, this thing I’m writing...I came up with the setting for Fogworld in, probably, 2014. Immediately, I had TWO ideas for stories in Fogworld. One idea was “Timeshare,” the standalone story that constitutes the first two chapters of ‘Wandering City Blues.’ The other idea was this thing I’m working on this month. If you read Wandering City Blues, this idea involves a certain set of characters introduced near the end of the chapter “September,” on Miami Beach. They’ve become my most-asked question in the last two years but I couldn’t fit their story anywhere into WCB and I’ve spent the better part of City Limits working my way to it.

I’ve currently written about 160,000 words in the Fogworld universe. Wandering City Blues constitutes just under half of it, to give you a sense of scale. I’ve spent 160,000 words and four years leading up to the event I’m working on this month. It’s likely the biggest thing that will happen in the series, it will decide the outcome of the Final World War waged throughout the book (90,000 words and counting!) and it will change the course of history for these characters who’ve been living with me for four years - that’s since Robin Williams passed away.

In that time, you have welcomed Fogworld and the stories of Leon Adler, Iris 13, Jeremai 1 and the roaming kaiju cities into your literary world. You took a chance on a weird new IP despite a market saturation of dystopian post-apocalypse and you trusted me with your hard-earned money to support whatever the Hell this bizarre thing is I’m doing with my life. And it means more to me than you could imagine. All I want is to tell you a good story. One that will stick with you. One that will entertain you and maybe make you think.

And what’s maybe my best story to date is being drawn up between now and Halloween. Thank you, my friends, for your continued support and engagement here. If this is half as entertaining to you as it is stressful/anxious for me, it will be BIG. Stay tuned.

From City Limits: Fogworld vol. 2...

Got a cousin’s a musician off in Galatea. Name of Adrian. Serious kinda feller, couple years older than I am, but runt of the litter. Plays a guitar that’ll make you weep. Once in the month of April a couple years back, well after all that hubbub with the crazies in his hometown, he come over for a visit for a spell – get outta town, visit family, all that. We’s sittin’ listening to him pluck his strings and soon enough daddy tells us it’s time for bed. So Adrian and I’s laying in our beds and I asked him how hard it was playing his guitar. He didn’t answer for such a time as to make me think he’d fallen asleep, so I gave it up. Then I heard him say “Ellis, the guitar only has one enemy.”

I thought I misheard him. “Enemy?” I asked.

“Yes,” he replied. “The guitar, by itself, has the potential to do anything, to play anything in the world that has – or hasn’t yet – been written. What I mean is, every note for several octaves is on the neck, right?”

I nodded, then remembered it was dark and he wasn’t looking at me. “Yeah.”

“So anything can be played,” he repeated. He was more tellin’ than askin’, but I agreed anyway. Then he said, “That means its only hindrance, the only thing stopping that guitar from fulfilling its maximum potential, is the limitation of skills of the musician who wields it. If he misses notes, some of the message is lost. If he plays any less than perfectly, the sound is miscommunicated. The guitar knows this – it knows the only thing stifling it from producing the most beautiful sounds in the world is the same thing it needs to make sounds in the first place. And on our end, our best hope is to play the correct notes, with passion and respect, and hope we aren’t making enemies with the instrument. Ultimately, the guitar’s greatest – and only – enemy is the hand that plays it.”

“Oh,” I said, pretending to understand. “I getcha.”

I felt like he was the one nodding now, even though I couldn’t precisely see. His last words on the subject were “One day you will.

“One day you will.”

So far, 'Fogworld vol. 2: City Limits' is 71,298 words spread out across 17 chapters. Please enjoy this excerpt from a newly-finished chapter.

"Truth is, ain’t no child can earn the type of approval he wants from his parents. Seen people spend their whole lives seeking it. Damn shame. Sometimes parents’re proud of you, and sometimes they say so. Other times they’re ashamed of you, and they will damn sure tell you as much. End of the day, though, they got you beat by 20, 30 years, and the sum total of how you do right by your parents ranges from disappointing them to not disappointing them. Not disappointin’s the best you can hope for."
