Today's the day! 🎉🎉 We are happy to publicly announce the winner of the $1000 Make More Comics Grant for 2025: Oliver Arthur and his comics Seeds!

This year was extremely competitive and the largest applicant pool in our five-year history. This year included first-time cartoonists, seasoned veterans, and Eisner nominees. Seeds stood out as a beautiful, silent story of discovery, friendship, loss, and growth that spoke volumes to all of our judges.

Oliver said to us: “I’m proud of this comic, but it’s always a guessing game when considering how other people might react to it. The news that I’ve received this grant is a huge encouragement; I’m jumping at the chance to get this thing out there to the people. Comics are a bit of a solitary medium; we often make the books by ourselves, publish them by ourselves, and then put them out into the world where a reader enjoys them by themselves, so the opportunity to know that one of my books has made such a good impression is just so awesome.”

Many, many thanks to Don Simpson, Eli Schwab, John Kelly, Chris Anderson, and Jeff Yandora for their work as judges, and the support of our founder Will Hoffknecht that made it all possible!

2024 Make More Comics Grant Announcement

PATTERSON, California - The Make More Comics Arts Grant is proud to announce the winner of the 4th annual MMC Grant. Out of all the qualified submission packets we received the judging panel has chosen Mihaela Erceg (who goes by the name Mihe) and her comics project Salty Banana as our 2024 award recipient.

Made in collaboration with Super Moon Productions, Salty Banana follows college roommates and party animals Salty Banana, Raspberry Cake, and Green Mint, as they try to navigate the weird and complex world of young adulthood. Super Moon states “Mihe’s funky style instantly delivers a funny, off-kilter story. She’s perfectly deranged and hands-down the best visual storyteller out there.”

"I never believed this project would become so big. I created it while sitting and having a coffee and vodka one morning between classes when I asked a friend for a random drawing prompt and she just said ‘Salty Banana’. I have no idea where she pulled that out but the moment she said it I immediately saw Banana in front of my eyes. Pretty cool that such an idea, from my crazy college years, not only withstood the test of time but is growing. Thank you everyone, I am very excited to continue making more!"

2023 Make More Comics Grant Announcement

PATTERSON, California - The Make More Comics Arts Grant is proud to announce the winner of the 3rd annual MMC Grant. Out of all the qualified submission packets we received the judging panel has chosen Hana Chatani and her comics project Love Condemns Her as our 2023 award recipient.

Love Condemns Her is a short comic story that builds upon the fairy tale of The Little Mermaid to explore themes of immaturity, sexuality/asexuality, and the empathy or lack thereof that teenagers find themselves with as they expand their perspective into a larger world. This coming-of-age story told through the q***r lens is a perfect example of why Hana Chatani’s work continues to garner attention across the globe.

“Resources for comic artists are rare and dear, especially in my country of residence. However, entities like the ShortBox Comics Fair and Cartoonist Cooperative springing up in recent years highlight the expanding community, interest in comic making, and the growing need for resources and mutual aid that comes along with it” states creator Hana Chatani. “I am ecstatic to receive the MMC arts grant which is a tremendous aid towards furthering my comic making practice, and with such a gift I hope to give back to the community to help others with their cartooning journeys.”

After months of open submissions we are here! The submission period for the 2023 Make More Comics Arts Grant is closed, all submissions have been vetted for the requirements, and the submissions packets have been sent in the mail to the judging panel.

This year we received more valid submissions than ever before cover three continents, slowing going world-wide!

We keep slowly growing every year and giving out direct cash payments. If you want to support the MMC Arts Grants for 2024 we will be opening official sponsorship opportunities!
