Make More Comics

Make More Comics Make More Comics is a soon-to-be non-profit organization promoting comics literacy and the craft of making comics through programs and grants.

The Xeric Grant was a force in comics self-publishing. It helped bring names into the public eye that we may not have seen otherwise such as Jason Shiga, David Choe, Jeff Lemire, and Tom Scioli. Many of these creators have talked about how the Xeric changed their career path – not because it was a huge amount of money, which it wasn’t, but because it meant something to creators. It carried with it a certain level of prestige and the ability to reach a wider audience. With that we have created an arts micro-grant program. This grant will give a small amount of cash directly to creator(s) to assist with small press and self publishing in the comics industry. We will have an application process and deadlines from which we will select finalists and winners. The money for this grant will be supported by the comics we publish. If all goes as planned we will be able to give out the first of these grants mid next year. In the spirit of Ed and Jim and the Cartoonist Kayfabe community that we are part of we named it the Make More Comics Arts Grant, or the MMC for short. This means that you will be paying a bit more for all future issues of H%C but rest assured that the extra money is going to not only pay creators for their work, but also to fund a grant that will help publish even more new and exciting comics. Congratulations to this year's Make More Comics Grantee .studio!

Joe Walsh is a multimedia artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. His (first) self-published comic The Shifting Ground Vol. 1 was featured in The Comics Journal’s Best of 2025 and reviewed positively by The Comics Journal, Ryan’s Four Color Apocalypse, and Living the Line. In addition to comics, Walsh works across printmaking, animation, and freelance design/illustration. His animation work for the documentary film Why We Walk earned him an Ohio Arts Council individual excellence award in 2023. This year's grant will help Joe bring The Shifting Ground Vol. 2 to life.

Upon learning he was the winner of the 2026 grant, Joe said, "It means a lot to know I was selected from such a large and talented group. I saw that you took extra time to pick a winner this year, which made me nervous! I’m honored to have found the joyous outlet that is making comics. It feels like the first true amalgam of all the disparate interests and attempts that I made before it. I’m excited to make more and more and more."

Power Pulp is thrilled to include Joe as the latest edition to our self-publishing collective and distribution model. Power Pulp is was established to bring awareness of this corner of the comics industry to the forefront and showcase the best of the best. Joe Walsh clearly fits the bill. This was a challenging year. From first-time cartoonists to Eisner and Harvey nominees, this was the largest and most diverse group of proposals we have ever received. Our judges (, , , and ) had their work cut out for them, but they were able to sort through everything during a series of tremendous discussions (intermixed with long periods of reading and decision-making!) I am extremely grateful to them for all of their time and expertise in making this year a success.

To all of you who applied, we are thankful for you as well. The art that you create is worthy of great support. Let us know when your work is published! We will be more than happy to direct our audience to it!
