Press Release:

Lincoln Township Fire Department Responds to Commercial Fire

On December 15 at 5:32 a.m., the Lincoln Township Fire Department was dispatched to 5131 St. Joseph Avenue for a fire investigation and a report of a possible transformer fire. Upon arrival, Chief Chiarello conducted a 360-degree size-up and confirmed a working fire in the large shop area of the structure and upgraded the response to a full structure fire response.

Firefighters from Lincoln Township, Lake Township, St. Joseph City Public Safety, and Benton Harbor Public Safety worked together to contain the blaze. Lincoln Township Engine 24 made an aggressive attack on the Charlie side of the structure while assisting departments attacked the fire from the Alpha side.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of all responding firefighters, the fire was successfully contained to the shop area. However, due to the large amount of contents inside the building, the maze-like layout, and freezing conditions, extensive overhaul operations were required to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to prevent further damage.

The fire has been fully extinguished, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our current model operates as a paid-on-call fire department and we are not staffed full time. This creates a significant risk to the community, as we cannot ensure an immediate response to emergencies. With call volume increasing 69% since 2015, the demand for our services is growing, and our current staffing model is no longer sustainable.

Funding a full-time department is achievable. Based on the average taxable value of a home in our township, full-time coverage can be provided for just 61 cents per day per residence guaranteeing a reliable and rapid response for everyone in the community.

Our approach is phased and strategic, designed to enhance safety while managing costs responsibly:

Proposed Phase One - April 1, 2026:

• Bring on two full-time firefighters to cover day shifts, working five days per week.
• This step begins building full-time coverage while ensuring a smooth transition from our current staffing model and keeping costs manageable.

Proposed Phase Two - April 1, 2028:

• Achieve full 24/7/365 coverage with three shifts.
• Each shift will have two full-time firefighters, totaling six, plus one additional swing firefighter to provide flexibility, support, and keep overtime costs low.

Together, these phases create a sustainable path forward, improving response times, enhancing community safety, and supporting our firefighters. This is not just an investment in equipment or staffing it is an investment in the well-being and security of every resident.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As you get ready for the big feast, here are a few important tips to keep your home and family safe:

Stay in the kitchen
Most cooking fires happen when food is left unattended. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.

Keep flammables away from heat
Move oven mitts, towels, wooden utensils, and packaging away from burners.

Create a “kid-free zone”
Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove and hot food areas.

Be cautious with turkey fryers
• Never use a turkey fryer indoors, on decks, or in garages.
• Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before frying.
• Keep the fryer on a flat, level surface away from the house.

Set timers and stay alert
Use timers to remind you when dishes are cooking, especially if you’re multitasking.

Check your smoke alarms
Make sure alarms are working before you start cooking.

From all of us at the fire department, have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
