Placeholder Magazine is a fiercely independent critical voice covering contemporary arts, culture, and literature. We are a Central Valley-based not-for-profit arts organization led entirely by volunteers. Through print and digital mediums, we provide an accessible forum for diverse voices as well as energize and activate young leaders through artistic practice, collaborative and collective decision making, and community-based projects locally and beyond.

🎶 “If at first, you don’t succeed… dust ya self off and try again”~ 🎼

Reflecting on what a beautiful gathering the Culture Community Circle at the was. Over 100+ registered and the attendance was packed! Thank you all for coming to open these much-needed conversations 🙏🏽

When we set out to make ‘A Compass in Complexity,’ ultimately we were a group of young people and friends that were frustrated at the challenges in our community and wanted to use the arts to both heal and put solutions forward. But we had momentum, but not much direction.. disoriented by what was happening, we eventually broke down. We apologize to those who were in that tough process with us.

In the aftermath of the first attempt at making this magazine, the following four directions emerged as a guiding light for what we’re trying to make this time around. These were deep and meaningful starting places, and many amazing conversations emerged at the gathering with these.

We’re curious how to deepen these convos and invite more people (and creativity) into these ideas, and have a plan to share out ways to do that soon. More to come! 🧭

Today’s the day! We’re excited to welcome everyone who can join us for a full day of dreaming, scheming, learning and making for the future of the Central Valley— and to honor and consider everyone we do this work for that maybe can’t make it today, for whatever reasons.

Not only are we grateful to .workshop for their contribution of beautiful horse-lined turntables and ceramic assortments to the raffle, but we uplift them today for being a beacon for makers and a space for creative exploration and experiments. They are one example of a group we want to celebrate and support in the ecosystem of culture and social change. If you aren’t making it to the Culture Community Circle, consider going to Vegan Soulstice at the Hatch today and every 1st Saturday!

“While it is clear that the theatre may not be fully salvageable, it is the vision and values behind this cultural space that is activating the community to come together. The Empire Theatre and how it was held represents local business, cultural expression, and historical preservation.”

An effort to preserve takes center stage at the theatre. Read the full story at placeholdermag.com.
