What are YOU hated for?
We celebrate Dr. King's birthday as a national holiday, but it seems like our recollection of why has been stunningly altered. Yes, we celebrate Dr. King's birthday because he was an incredible leader, orator, pastor and humanitarian. But that's not why we celebrate his birthday. We celebrate his birthday because, in addition to being an incredible leader, orator, pastor and humanitarian... he was assassinated. His life was taken at the tender age of 39, leaving behind a wife and 4 children to mourn the irreparably cavernous void of a husband and father whose very life and work was believed to be a threat to our national security.
While Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are being flooded with sanitized quotes and images posturing a beloved memory of Dr. King's legacy, the un-sanitized truth is that Dr. King wasn't assassinated because he was loved. Dr. King was assassinated because he was hated. Which is why, before you make that post honoring Dr. King’s legacy and copying/pasting snippets from his I Have A Dream Speech, truly honoring his legacy requires asking the question what are YOU hated for?
What are you saying and doing in pursuit of justice that makes people uncomfortable? That makes donors call and threaten to quit giving? That makes customers call and threaten to quit buying? That makes members call and threaten to quit attending? I’ve listened to elected officials, clergy and everyday Americans call for racial unity… but I've noticed that the call for racial unity is strikingly empty of the call to do the necessary work to repair the conditions that created racial disunity in the first place. May our calls for unity no longer be hollow, but may they be filled with the work to BUILD a new reality for our nation; one where I'm not okay with you not being okay. A reality where hard conversations aren't silenced out of personal discomfort. A reality where I care more about the legacy I will leave than the comfort of the life I will live.
THIS is what Dr. King’s life meant. Being hated for doing the things that made people uncomfortable. So, what are YOU hated for?
