In September 2025, North Dakota farmer Randy Fyllesvold, 43, tragically lost his life in a car accident just before harvest season. He left behind his wife, Kharra, their two young sons, and nearly 1,400 acres of corn, soybeans, and canola still waiting to be harvested.

As the family faced an overwhelming loss, friends and neighbors refused to let them carry the burden alone. Local farmers quickly organized a plan, promising Randy's family that the harvest would be completed.

A few weeks later, around 75 farmers from more than 10 nearby communities arrived with 12 combines, grain carts, trucks, and other equipment. Working side by side, they harvested every field in a coordinated effort, while local grain elevators helped manage the massive harvest.

The extraordinary show of support reflected the impact Randy had on those around him. Friends described him as a kind, hardworking man who was always willing to help others, and now the community came together to help his family when they needed it most.

Kharra later said watching dozens of farmers fill the fields in Randy's honor was an unforgettable sight. She thanked everyone who stood beside her family during such a difficult time and said the kindness they received would never be forgotten.

The U.S. Marine Corps is introducing a new way to counter the growing threat of drones by combining a familiar weapon with artificial intelligence.

The new system, called Bullfrog, is a robotic mount that transforms the widely used M240 7.62mm machine gun into an AI-assisted counter-drone platform. Rather than relying on radar, it uses computer vision and passive sensors to detect, track, and calculate firing solutions against fast-moving drones while remaining difficult to detect.

Although the technology automates tracking and aiming, a human operator always makes the final decision to fire. This "human-in-the-loop" approach ensures Marines remain in control of every engagement.

One of Bullfrog's biggest advantages is cost. Instead of using expensive interceptor missiles to destroy relatively inexpensive drones, the system can neutralize aerial threats with standard machine-gun ammunition, significantly reducing the cost of air defense.

The platform is being integrated into the Marine Corps' Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System (L-MADIS), providing a kinetic backup when electronic jamming is ineffective against autonomous drones. Because it uses the M240, Marines can rely on a weapon they already know how to operate and maintain, eliminating the need for an entirely new weapons system.

The U.S. Army has moved its Dark Eagle Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) from years of development toward an operational capability built around mobility and speed.

Unlike an aircraft-launched weapon, Dark Eagle is transported by ground vehicles. Its mobile launcher carries two missiles, allowing Army units to relocate, establish a firing position and move again—an important advantage for a system designed to operate in contested environments.

The weapon combines a two-stage rocket booster with a Common Hypersonic Glide Body. After launch, the booster accelerates the glide body to hypersonic velocity. The vehicle then travels through the upper atmosphere at speeds above Mach 5 while retaining the ability to manoeuvre.

That combination of extreme speed, manoeuvrability and a less predictable flight path can make hypersonic weapons particularly challenging for existing missile-defence systems to track and intercept.

Dark Eagle's development was not straightforward. Technical problems and unsuccessful or cancelled tests contributed to delays before later testing allowed the Army to advance the programme.

The system has also been incorporated into U.S. military operations and exercises in the Indo-Pacific, demonstrating how road-mobile hypersonic weapons could become part of America's long-range strike strategy.

In 1958, Richard and Mildred Loving were arrested in Virginia for one reason: they were married to each other.

At the time, Virginia law prohibited in*******al marriage. Richard was white, while Mildred was of Black and Native American ancestry. After marrying legally in Washington, D.C., the couple returned home to Virginia, where police arrested them in the middle of the night.

In 1959, they pleaded guilty to violating Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law. Their one-year prison sentences were suspended on the condition that they leave Virginia and not return together for 25 years.

The Lovings moved to Washington, D.C., but they wanted to return to their rural Virginia home, where their families and community lived. Mildred eventually sought help, and attorneys connected with the ACLU took up their case.

Their legal fight reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

On June 12, 1967, the Court ruled unanimously in Loving v. Virginia that laws prohibiting in*******al marriage violated the Constitution’s Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses. The ruling invalidated remaining state bans on in*******al marriage.

Richard and Mildred never set out to become famous activists. They primarily wanted something much simpler: the freedom to be married and live together in their own home state.

Their case ultimately changed American law and became one of the most important civil-rights decisions involving marriage.

Across parts of North and East Africa, increasingly severe heat and prolonged dry conditions are putting additional pressure on pastoral communities and their livestock. Camels can tolerate temperatures that would overwhelm many other animals, but that resilience has limits.

In exceptionally hot environments such as Ethiopia’s Afar region, herders can face shrinking water supplies, deteriorating grazing land and greater difficulty keeping animals healthy. Young camels can be especially vulnerable when extreme temperatures coincide with dehydration, inadequate nutrition or disease.

The consequences extend far beyond the animals themselves. For many pastoral families, camels provide milk, meat, transportation and income, making livestock losses a direct threat to livelihoods and food security.

Scientists have long considered camels among the livestock species best suited to hotter, drier climates. But adaptation does not make them invincible. As climate extremes intensify, access to water, veterinary care, shade and sustainable grazing areas becomes increasingly important.

During periods of unusually warm ocean temperatures, the availability and distribution of krill — their primary prey — can change dramatically, forcing whales to devote more energy to finding food.

Scientists have observed that when feeding conditions deteriorate, blue whales may reduce some of their vocal activity. Because their calls play important roles in communication and reproduction, these changes can offer researchers valuable clues about how the animals are responding to environmental stress.

Marine heatwaves can disrupt food webs far beyond whales themselves. Changes in temperature affect plankton and krill, which can then influence fish, seabirds and other predators throughout the ecosystem.

Blue whales may be particularly vulnerable because they depend heavily on dense concentrations of krill to meet their enormous energy requirements.

✏️ Pen and Paper Are Making Their Way Back Into American Classrooms

After years of classrooms becoming increasingly dependent on laptops and tablets, some U.S. schools and teachers are putting more emphasis on an old-fashioned learning tool: handwriting.

The reasoning is straightforward. Writing assignments by hand can help keep students focused on the task in front of them while removing many of the distractions that come with an internet-connected screen. It also makes it more difficult to instantly turn to search engines or AI tools instead of working through a problem independently.

Educators who favor more handwritten work also point to potential benefits for note-taking, memory and classroom participation. Rather than constantly switching between tabs, notifications and apps, students can concentrate on the lesson itself.

That doesn't mean technology is disappearing from schools. Digital tools remain an important part of modern education. Instead, some classrooms are trying to find a healthier balance between screens and traditional learning methods.

After all the technological upgrades in education, one of the most useful classroom tools may still be one of the simplest:

a pencil, a piece of paper, and a student's own thinking. ✏️
