Short Drama
Title: Look beyond your pains.
Act 1, Scene 1
At a corner, Ngozi is on her knees praying for a child. She cried “Just one Child O Lord. Wipe my shame, wipe my reproach with just one son my Lord“, she cried, weeping loudly , with tears streaming down her face.
Chioma comes on stage. She began to move about with pride, arrogance, and a sense of dominion; singing “I own my husband, I have evidence, only children are the Evidence of ownership in Marriage“.
Ngozi- arose from her knees, “Not again Chioma “, she said with a sense of pain and frustrations , as she wipes her tears, stares at Chioma, shakes her head calmly, sighed, and walks away. She stopped halfway and calmly, but firmly said Chichi , you are not my God, then walks away.
Chioma - Laughs for some time, and continues “Your God? Which God? You are barren . Ngo you are barren. Is it not the same God we serve? Is he not the same God who gave me my wonderful children? Leave God out of this. You are just a barren thing”.
SMH, she hissed, and sings “I own my husband Emeka alone. I have proof of ownership, I own my husband alone“! she sang aloud looking towards the path Ngozi went, then she walked out of the stage still singing.
Act 1, Scene 2.
“Ngo my love“, Emeka called out.
“Yes my Lord“ Ngozi answered, walking to meet him. Welcome back home my Lord“ She greeted, embracing her husband. Hope you had a beautiful day my Lord. She aked. Emeka answered in an affirmative response, then Ngozi offered to get him some water to drink.
My Lord, it is a hot day. You will need some ice water. Let me get you some water to cool off.
Emeka- Thank you my beloved wife. This is why you are dear to my heart. You know what to do at the right time.
(As Ngozi was leaving), He added, call me Chichi. Let me divide this food items between the two of you.
Ngozi returns with Chichi and a glass of water in her hand. As she offered the water to her husband, Chioma casted a spiteful look at her and mockingly said
“ I have my children all over the house to give my husband water. This is not your duty. You should be making food for your children by this time“.
Emeka“Chioma!“! He cautioned her.
Ngozi looked at her, looked away from her, and stared upwards, then she shut her eyes tightly without a word (but an unspoken body language of God Chioma is doing this because you have not blessed me with my own child).
Emeka - my dear, don’t mind her. He said pulling Ngozi closer toward himself. God will give you children at the appointed time. Cheer up!
Ngozi smiled while Chioma laughed mockingly. When she asked? When she stops seeing her flow?
Emeka - Ngo my love, I got these food stuffs for you and Chioma . Divide it into two and take one part, then give the other part to her.
Chioma - For what? She jumps in interupting her husband. Who will she feed with the food? She has no child to feed the food to, she spat out the words to ridicule Ngo.
Ngozi- Must you remind me of my childlessness at all times? Am I God that gives children? God will answer me and bless me with great children at his appointed time. She sobs softly.
Chioma- Laughs mockingly, and said “It’s not about God. Ngo, you are a barren woman! I have a lot of mouths to feed, why share the food with me when you have none.
Emeka - Enough of this Chioma! He scolded her. At the appointed time, God will remember Ngo” He added.
Chioma laughed again, saying “ Oh, God will remember her. She laughed some more. Thank God you know that God has forgotten her”.
Ngozi held her chest in hurts, looking at Chioma in brokeness. Her husband pulled her to himself, comforted her, then casted an angry look at Chichi , and shook his head, because of her ill treatments to Ngozi.
He walked out of the stage with Ngozi.
Chioma- Let them go. Truth must be told. What does she need food for. Let her eat with me and my chilren. She doesn’t deserve her portion of the food, because she is barren! Why give her a personal portion?
She happily packs the food in a hurry. They are all mine! She boastfully prolonged the word.
Act 2, scene 1.
Emeka came back on stage .
Emeka- where are the food items? Chioma! Chioma!! He called out.
Chioma arrives.
Emeka- where are the food stuffs I bought for you and Ngozi?
Chioma- I took them to my kitchen. She has no mouths to feed.
Ngozi walks in disturbed.
- My Lord, why are you yelling? I heard you shouting. Is anything the matter? She asked, looking worried .
Chioma- You are the matter, Ngozi.
Emeka- Be silent before my face. He said to Chioma . Go in there, and get me those food stuffs now, He continued?
My Lord, let me help her to bring them, for they are much, Ngozi volunteered to help Chioma.
Chioma- Oversabi (slang) . Afterall, you don’t have children to spend your time on. With all my children, will I need anybody’s help, or ever have time to offer to help others? She said, reffering to Ngozi.
Ngozi- It is well. Your children are mine also! Let us go and get the food items for our Lord, our husband! He is getting upset already. Ngozi felt concerned about her husband’s emotion.
They left the stage, leaving Emeka behind.
Emeka- Ha! He sighed exhaustively in anger. What a troublesome and insensitive woman! Even if Chioma has no children, she still has a postion in my life and home.
Imagine that! What an audacity! She took all the food to herself!
Ngo and Chichi brings in the food items and Emeka himself shared them between his wives and asked Chioma to choose first.
Ngozi bent down to pack her food supply off the stage happily.
Chioma packed her food supply grudginly, feeling unsatisfied.
Emeka looks at her and shakes his head.
“Very insensitive“! He said, and walks off the stage behind as Ngozi .
