The total population of the towns served is about 11,000 year-round residents, with that nu

The Weekly Packet, Blue Hill, was founded in 1960, and the Castine Patriot, Castine, in 1980. Nathaniel Barrows purchased the Ad-Vantages in 1968, The Packet in 1981, and the Patriot in 1990. In Nov. 2025, Penobscot Bay Press expanded to Bucksport, Orland, and Verona Island and relaunched Castine Patriot as River Observer. The company first started publishing books in 1977. We publish multiple books per year in sync with the summer season and winter holidays.
