Tom Needham’s The Sounds of Film

Legendary director Wayne Wang joins Tom Needham on the next SOUNDS OF FILM in order to discuss his latest film COMING HOME AGAIN.

COMING HOME AGAIN is based on a personal essay by Chang-rae Lee that was published in The New Yorker, Coming Home Again is an intimate family drama about a mother, a son, and the burden of family expectations.

Chang-rae, a first generation Korean American, has returned to his family home in San Francisco to care for his ailing mother. Wanting nothing more than to fulfill his role as the supportive son, Chang-rae must come to terms with his own conflicted emotions towards his mother.

The film takes place over the course of one full day. During this day, he attempts to prepare a traditional Korean New Year’s Eve dinner; like the one his mother always cooked for the family. The care and precision that goes into preparing this meal gives him time to reflect on the intense relationship between them. Memories about their relationship become a doorway into a woman who was so much more than the mother he thought he knew. Chang-rae is now faced with the dilemma of living with the permanent scars of family sacrifice unresolved, or the risk of opening new wounds with his mother dying.

Wayne Wang is known for his films THE JOY LUCK CLUB, SMOKE, EAT A BOWL OF TEA and BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE.

ZEITGEIST’s Peter Joseph joins Tom Needham for a conversation about his new film INTERREFLECTIONS on New York’s SOUNDS OF FILM.

InterReflections, the first of a trilogy, is an experimental, social commentary film. Structurally, the work is mixed-genre, combining three mutual timelines, with aspects of documentary, horror, science fiction satire and more. Inspired by the avant-garde tradition of impressionistic abstraction, challenging convention, the movie is grounded in a distinct sociological perspective surrounding the subject of public health and human well-being.

Based upon the writer/director’s best-selling 2017 book The New Human Rights Movement, InterReflections is a fantasy that extends the book’s academic content into a more creative form.
Each of the three timeline layers serve a content and aesthetic function.

The acclaimed director of EPICENTRO, Hubert Sauper, is Tom Needham’s special guest on THE SOUNDS OF FILM.

EPICENTRO is a richly textured portrait of the resilient people of Cuba directed by renowned documentarian Hubert Sauper (We Come As Friends, Oscar-nominated Darwin’s Nightmare). Winner of the 2020 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema Documentary, the film launches in virtual cinemas through Kino Marquee starting Friday, August 28.

EPICENTRO is an immersive and metaphorical portrait of post-colonial, “utopian” Cuba, where the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine still resonates. This Big Bang ended Spanish colonial dominance in the Americas and ushered in the era of the American Empire. At the same time and place, a powerful tool of conquest was born: cinema as propaganda. In his latest film, Hubert Sauper explores a century of interventionism and myth-making together with the extraordinary people of Havana—who he calls “young prophets"—to interrogate time, imperialism and cinema itself.
