In Memory of Sgt. Donald “Don” Brady

It is with deep sadness that the Smithfield Police Department announces the passing of retired Sergeant Donald “Don” Brady, who passed away on August 5, 2025.

Sgt. Brady began his law enforcement career with the Poquoson Police Department, serving from August 21, 2001, to May 1, 2011. He joined the Smithfield Police Department on June 17, 2011, where he served with honor and dedication until his retirement on March 31, 2023.

During his time with Smithfield PD, Sgt. Brady served in many roles including General Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Emergency Response Team member. He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant and later served as the Investigations Sergeant and Administrative Sergeant.

Sgt. Brady was known for his passion for teaching, his outgoing personality, and the positive influence he had on those around him. He mentored many and played a significant role in shaping the next generation of officers.

We do not have details on funeral services at this time, but we will share that information as soon as it becomes available.

The Smithfield Police Department extends our heartfelt condolences to Sgt. Brady’s family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him. His legacy of service, leadership, and mentorship will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Sgt. Brady. We thank you for your service.

August 11th is the first day of school for the 2025-2026 school year. Be aware of school buses picking up and dropping off children. If a school bus is stopped and has its read lights activated, it is against the law for you to pass the school bus. The only exception is if it is a divided highway with a median/barrier.

Did you know:
Passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a reckless driving offense. If convicted, reckless driving is a criminal offense that could lead up to a fine of up to $2,500 and/or jail time. (46.2-859).
