Bears around Stowe have reliable sources of food in the village, from backyard birdfeeders to unattended and poorly secured trash at homes, lodging properties and restaurants. As a result, Stowe has the highest rate of human-bear interactions in the state, according to Jaclyn Comeau, a wildlife scientist with the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Of the 891 registrants who provided the town of Stowe with information about their rental properties as of late May, just 196, or 23 percent, listed their “owner mailing address” in Stowe.

Data from Stowe’s new short-term rental registry, which went live at the beginning of May, shows that most of those properties’ owners don’t live in town full-time.
