Continue to weather aware and monitor for storm development which could quickly turn severe.

I've had some people ask what the difference between a weather watch and a weather warning is. We're far from meteorologists but I do think this picture is one of the best and easiest visuals to help understand the difference.

However, always be weather aware and be prepared for quick changes to the forecasts. We'll do our best to keep you posted on any weather alerts, but make sure you have multiple options.

I was out of state last night, over 500 miles away from Stuart, and my phone went off at 1146pm with alerts from Adair & Guthrie County EMA. If you haven't already signed up for alerts with them, that might be something worth checking out.

Tornado Warning Recap – What Happened Near Stuart Last Night

Last night, a Tornado Warning was issued for the Guthrie County portion of the Stuart area, just north of the city limits. While the City of Stuart was not officially included in the warning area, the rotating portion of the storm was tracking extremely close to town, prompting understandable concern.

Why Some Phones Got Alerts and Others Didn’t
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) are not based on your GPS location. Instead, alerts are broadcast through specific cell towers that fall within the National Weather Service’s warning zone (also called a "polygon"). If your phone was connected to a tower outside that polygon, it may not have received the alert—even if you were physically near the storm.

The main cell tower serving Stuart is located at 1155 Victor Ave, just south of town in Adair County, outside city limits. If the warning polygon didn’t include that tower, phones using it would not have received the alert.

Why the Sirens Didn’t Go Off
Because the City of Stuart was not technically included in the official warning, the tornado sirens were not activated. We understand this caused concern.

It’s also important to note: Even if the sirens had gone off, they are designed to warn people who are outdoors, not to wake up residents inside every home or building. Sirens are just one layer of a broader alert system.

You Need Multiple Ways to Get Warnings!
Whether it’s a missed phone alert, no sirens, or a warning polygon that stops on the other side of your street, the safest approach is to rely on multiple alert methods:

✅ Make sure emergency alerts are turned on in your phone’s settings.

✅ Use a NOAA weather radio, especially in bedrooms.

✅ Stay weather aware before going to bed—Iowa’s strongest storms often hit overnight.

We appreciate everyone who reached out with questions and concerns. Please use this as an opportunity to review your storm preparedness plan and ensure you have more than one reliable way to receive alerts.

Stay safe, Stuart.
