It’s All About The Dress

She found a way to keep memories of her homeland alive long after she left this earth.
Anna, or Mrs. Joseph Vodehnal as she was called in an article June 19, 1963 in the Omaha World-Herald newspaper, used her art of stitchery and passion for her cultural heritage to bring the beauty of traditional Czechoslovakia to her adopted Midwest home of Clarkson, Nebraska.
Long into her battle with cancer and intensive cobalt treatments in Omaha, Anna continued to make costumes for Czech dancers at Clarkson’s annual Czech Festival and dress dozens of dolls for window displays and sale at the event.
International House Of Dolls recently acquired one of the dolls dressed by Vodehnal along with the World-Herald article and a July 19, 1963 letter she typed and signed to a collector in Medford, Oregon, Mrs. Kathryn L. Davidson.
Davidson had contacted Vodehnal asking to purchase a doll after reading about Vodehnal’s artistry in the article by reporter Tom Allan.
“Yesterday I received your nice letter, which was forwarded to me from Mr. Tom Allan of the Omaha World Herald. Thank you very much,” Vodehnal wrote.
She went on to describe the dolls for sale at an individual price of “$8 complete.”
“My dolls are 11 1/2 inches tall and fully dressed including the undergarments,” she wrote, adding that she would be willing to dress any doll sent to her by the requestee at a price of $6 each.
“There were many (of the costumed dolls) sold during our Czech Festival … as people from all over were in attendance,” she wrote.
Davidson saved the letter, along with a photo of the doll later received from Vodehnal. She filed the doll and letter under “Nationality Dolls Czech,” where it remained until eventually being sold at and estate sale and later making its way to IHOD.
According to online historical ancestry records, Vodehnal died in November 1974 at the age of 88.
That after many years of dressing dolls and dancers for the Clarkson Czech Festival.
Her adult and children’s costumes continued to be used at festivals there for several decades, including reunions of the dancers in subsequent years.
IHOD is thrilled to share with its online followers photos of Vodehnal, her dolls, some of the dancers and other relevant data.
It’s lovely to be able to help her keep her heritage and love of dolls, dance and costuming alive.
