What a year it has been.

It wasn’t a busy year for me in terms of content as you probably noticed. With our third kid arriving during the summer and the business growing, there wasn’t much time for anything else. However, the feeling of not having to chase content for content's sake really felt good. I didn’t want to post content just to get something out there and not create something meaningful or helpful. I was able to focus on the family and find clarity in the growth of the business. I did post stories of projects I’ve been working on and it was great connecting to those who follow along the way. Overall it was a much needed break from social media and I’m so grateful for those who still chimed in here and there on the stories. And I'm super thankful for the new and old clients who supported my work throughout the year. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a happy new year! See you in 2025!

This beauty is heading out to Cali!

Not complicated by any means but I did have to figure out the best way to make the round corners work. I glued up a few pieces of 1-1/2 boards and created a jig to double-side mill the shape on the CNC. This was before I picked up the 4th axis for the Shopsabre. Next time, it’ll be much easier. This was the first time I worked with brass as well. The vertices along the doors were custom made from solid brass blanks and I think it’s the detail that makes the piece unique. The client provided the design and selected Titanium Grey from for the finish.

First project test on the CNC came out nice. Quick little medicine stand for my wife’s coworker‘s daughter that I put together on , ran the code on , and got it all cut out using white oak on the . So happy to never have to change tools between tool paths 🙌🏻

Loving the warmth the white oak adds to this office. Happy with how this turned out! Many have asked about the wall texture. It’s actually Limewash paint and was done by the client. They did a great job and it’s a beautiful feature! What do you think?

Another one done 🙌🏻

The client wanted to fill in the empty area beside the fireplace. So I added some cabinetry and white oak floating shelves to tie in some of the other white oak features in the kitchen and accent wall. A few strips of LED lights remotely controlled gives the space a nice warm glow in the evening. Excited to see how it all comes together once the painters finish painting and all the furniture is in.

⬅️Before and After➡️

So glad that the living room is done just in time for Advent and I just can't get enough of this space! We wanted a space that was cozy, welcoming and relaxing. We also wanted a place that highlighted things that were important to us as a family and at the same time provided ample room for storage to keep the space tidy. I think we achieved it.

I honestly never thought I would like arches but I'm so glad we did. It highlights the main features which are the section for our home altar and a section for our family photos. I didn't want to over-emphasize the TV so LED strips were installed only in the arch areas. Because we have low ceilings here my wife was concerned that having such a huge entertainment center cause the space to feel short and claustrophobic. So I played with the scale and proportion and wanted the base area to visually look solid and heavier than the top portion. I opted for a thicker countertop profile and seamless white oak paneling and kept the base well below standard countertop height. Then I provided more void or open spaces above. This definitely worked out since the first thing my wife noticed was how open it felt 👍🏻😮‍💨

Which plywood should you use?

Since I’m using various types of plywood for this entertainment center I thought I’d give a bit of insight on why the variations.

1️⃣ Lumber Core. I used lumber core plywood for the long shelf that will sit below the TV. It’s super lightweight but can handle a good amount of load without sagging. I highly recommend it if you’re building shelves or making something that has to span longer distances. It won’t sag overtime like MDF. The downside is the core doesn’t hold screws all too well. Which leads to…
2️⃣ Veneer Core Plywood. This is the typical stuff used for cabinets and everyday projects. I normally use C2 grade white birch for most of my common cabinets or a prefinished birch for the nicer builds. It's very common, very reliable, and screws hold nice and tight in the wood layers. However, it is the most costly out of the three sheets I used in my project. And depending on the quality of the sheets, some won't stay flat especially 1/4 or 1/2 inch sheets.
3️⃣ MDF Core. Overall MDF is a super flat sheet with no imperfections on the face so it's great for veneer work. I used this for all of the white oak paneling and that flat stable core allowed me to align the panels perfectly. It is very heavy and cutting this stuff makes a crazy amount of dust. Usually, it's the cheapest out of the three but with the solid wood veneer, the price definitely can go pretty high.

You don't always need a table saw.

It sure helps, but I started out in my shop with a circular saw and a straight guide to break down sheet goods. Similar in function to this upgraded track saw. I don't think tools should stop you from getting started in woodworking and neither should skill level. About Us

Design Craft Workshop is a company located in Houston, TX and born from my passion for handmade, unique items. Since 2013, after graduation from architecture school I have been interested in working with my hands and turning my design into actual buildings. This desire for well-built large scale buildings lead me to this passion for the smaller well-built and thoughtfully designed furniture and home decor. It started as a hobby that turned into passion, and then blossomed into my store Design Craft Workshop. Get in touch to learn more about my process and what we have to offer.
