This piece is for everyone to read thoroughly and understand as this situation remains a huge problem within the young adults as some of them still do not understand the difference between Blood group, Genotype and Rh factor.
Rh factor is the positive or Negative sign beside the blood group such as
A+, B+, AB+ and O+
A-, B-, AB- and O-
Rh disease is a type of Hemolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn. The term "Rh disease" is commonly used to refer to HDFN as prior to the discovery of anti-Rhâ immune globulin, it was the most common type of HDFN (Heamolytic Disease of the Fetus and Newborn).
What is an Rh Factor?
An Rh factor is a protein found on some people's red blood cells. Most people have this protein and they're called Rh-positive. People who don't have the protein are called Rh-negative. When you're Rh-negative and your baby is Rh-positive, it's called Rh incompatibility.
What happens when a mother is Rh Positive and the Fetus is Rhesus Negative?
During a pregnancy, Rh antibodies made in a woman's body can cross the placenta and attack fetal blood cells. This can cause a serious type of anemia in the fetus in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. Red blood cells carry oxygen to all parts of the body.
What causes rhesus incompatibility in pregnancy?
Rh incompatibility is a condition that develops when a pregnant woman has Rh-negative blood and the baby in her womb has Rh-positive blood.
Can you still have a baby if you are Rh sensitized?
Rh sensitization normally isn't a problem with a first pregnancy. Most issues occur in future pregnancies with another Rh positive baby. During that pregnancy, your antibodies cross the placenta to fight the Rh positive cells in your baby's body. As the antibodies destroy the cells, your baby gets sick.
How do you treat rhesus factor?
Treatment for rhesus disease after delivery can include a light treatment called phototherapy, blood transfusions, and an injection of a solution of antibodies (intravenous immunoglobulin) to prevent red blood cells being destroyed. If rhesus disease is left untreated, severe cases can lead to stillbirth
Do you know when rhesus incompatibility can cause problems?
Rh incompatibility becomes a problem if you become pregnant a second time and have another Rh-positive fetus. In this case, your body will produce antibodies. These antibodies put the second fetus at risk for complications.
Which rhesus factor should not marry?
A person having Rh factor in blood is called Rh positive whereas that who does not carry this protein in the blood is called Rh negative. Marriage should be avoided in between Rh negative female & Rh positive male. This can be fatal for the mother as well as the baby of such parents.
How to avoid Rh sensitization?
This is called Rh sensitization. Your pregnancy care provider can prevent this from happening by giving you a shot (injection) of immune globulin.
