Our Story
When people hear the word, grapevine, they associate it with rumors, gossip, negative or exaggerated information, but the truth is, prior to the negative connotation, the grapevine served as a productive means of communication. Grapevine communication was used when formal articulation was insufficient. During the American Civil War of the 1860's, the grapevine was used interchangeably for informal communication. The military used vine-like wires to communicate over lines they thought were confusing, yet discovered it transported information quite rapidly and stronger. It was also used by slaves who passed on what was happening in the slave owners' homes, for political and social news, and how they knew when a battle was over (Jitendra Mishra). The Grapevine simply became a vocal telegraph to transport information, network with others, and exchange ideas. When a message is passed along from one person to another, it becomes tainted. But, when there is a group, a movement of people with one message to pass on to another group of people, the possibility of that message being conveyed precisely the way it was learned is bound to affect and create a long lasting, if not permanent mark. Our message is to use artistic common talk, also known as Poetry, and send it through the grapevine to provoke thought, be internalized, be talked about, viewed, listened to, recited, and enjoyed. Poetry and the Grapevine go hand in hand, in that they both serve as platforms to display and project information, ideas and perspective. From door to door, city to city, poetry was used as a unique vessel to reach out to the people in an artistic fashion. It became a movement, so much so that we're able to take poetry classes and express ourselves in poetry lounges. The Grapevine Sway is a business that will serve as the holding house of poetic language, producing and presenting fruitful minds with juicy information for others to sample, and ultimately, crave.
