The world’s most avid Cardinals and Illini fan is now cheering from heaven. Herschel Merwin Cosart passed away on November 28, 2025 doing the second favorite activity he enjoyed—working outdoors. His favorite activity was spending time with and caring for his spouse of 77 years, Rosemary (Riley) Cosart. The love, patience, and kindness Herschel and Rosemary shared with one another provided a true example of a devoted marriage that stood the test of time.
Herschel was a successful salesman who never met a stranger or stopped selling, despite his retirement from Farthings Incorporated in the early 1990s. In his retirement, Herschel became an author writing more than three books. He was famous for his garage sales and loved to negotiate. He was even more well-known for his faith in the Lord. Herschel was a warrior for Jesus who served as an Elder for his Church and was an active Gideon for over 60 years. He distributed Gideon Bibles everywhere he went, from college campuses to the McDonald’s drive thru.
When asked where he had been, Herschel always referenced a fictitious place that no one can say (or spell) so he provided specific directions that included locations like Wright’s Corner, Chickenfoot, and Post Oak. He was full of humor and lived life to the absolute fullest. He was an amazing father and grandfather encouraging his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids through countless sporting events, while also making helpful suggestions to the referees and umpires. Although his family is sad to lose their faithful patriarch, they know he is celebrating with his Savior and likely telling Him many stories.
Herschel is survived by his spouse, his five children, Tzena Tucker Laue (Larry) of Shumway, IL, Alan Cosart (Pam) of Spring Branch, TX, Rhonda Cain (Scott) of Deltona, FL, Joe Cosart (Cindy) of Friendswood, TX, and Tanya Summers (Tim) of Fort Worth, TX as well as 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren with three more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, son-in-law, and great-granddaughter.
Services will be held at the First Christian Church, 404 E. Locust St. in Cowden, IL on Friday, December 5, 2025 with visitation from 12:00 to 2:00 pm and funeral service to follow. Private internment will be held at Mound Cemetery with a reception at the Church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Gideons International. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden is assisting the family.

Our beloved brother, Glen Arthur Johnson, of Findlay, IL, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025, while celebrating with family – those he loved best. Our hearts are filled with sorrow for the loss of our eldest sibling.

Glen was born on October 21, 1946, in Shelbyville, IL, to Donald Burl and Pauline Mae (Allen) Johnson.
After surviving falling into a well, being almost run over, falling onto a picket fence and sustaining a huge splinter in his cheek, near peritonitis from cholecystitis and surgery and many days in ICU at Richard L. Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis, where they gave him excellent care and the long deserved recognition for his service to our country, two tours in Vietnam as a United States Navy Seabee diesel mechanic at DaNang, Glen lived to reach his 79th birthday this past October.
We enjoyed listening to him tell about his life and times on our family farm. He saved our father from certain peril twice for which we are forever grateful. He had an incredible memory and knowledge, and we always came away realizing he was a great man and how privileged we were to have him as our elder. He was calm and carried on.
He and Stanley farmed together. He loved going to tractor pulls and worked for many years as a diesel mechanic with Stanley at Johnson Diesel. They had a tradition of camping and fishing at Ramsey Lake on Father’s Day because Dad loved to.
Glen was active in Jaycees and held the office of president.
Glen had the privilege of taking the Honor Flight to Washington, DC, on November 3, 2022, with his nephew, Brandon, as guardian.
He leaves behind his heartbroken siblings, Stanley and Barb Johnson of Shelbyville, IL, Donna and Mike Oldham of Findlay, IL, Kathy Swarms of Shelbyville, IL, and Virginia and Dan Defend of Monticello, IL. He was a beloved uncle to Alison and Roscoe Hubner of Shelbyville, IL, Rachel Lejeune of Wailuku, Maui, Brandon Swarms of Herrin, IL, Eric and Rachel Defend of Monticello, IL, Evan Defend of Monticello, IL, Emily and David Erickson of Cisco, IL; and a great uncle to Cole Johnson and Bree of Assumption, IL, Jacqueline Johnson of Shelbyville, IL, Katelyn Johnson of Shelbyville, IL, Dylan and Hannah Hubner of Shelbyville, IL, Paige Hubner and Tanner Parks of Shelbyville, IL, Katie Lejeune of Johnson City, TN, Megan Lejeune of Johnson City, TN, Audrianna Defend of Monticello, IL, Isaac Defend of Monticello, IL, Elijah Defend of Monticello, IL, Annamarie Defend of Monticello, IL, and Kirsten Erickson of Cisco, IL; and great great uncle to Tucker Hubner and Lindy Hubner both of Shelbyville, IL.
Glen was preceded in death by his father, Donald Johnson; mother, Pauline Johnson Boehm; grandparents, Matthew and Mabel Johnson and Elgar and Ida Mae Allen; nephews, Douglas Johnson and David Johnson; and great great nephew, Weston Hubner.
