UPDATE..The roadway is now re-opened

ROADWAY CLOSURE..This morning, employees of the Crawford County Road District began making repairs to an embankment of the Meramec River that runs along Sappington Bridge Rd.
The wet Spring/Summer with consistent flooding has eroded trees along the embankment, causing the roadway to become dangerous.
Crews have closed a section of the roadway from Highway D to the Sappington Bridge River access while they work to make repairs.
Highway Department Workers are trying to get the road opened safely on this stretch of roadway and are working at the direction of the county road district.
The workers themselves, reportedly, are being verbally abused by some residents as they try to get the road reopened.
According to County Officials, the Highway Department could not do anything with the roadway until it received approval from the Missouri Corps of Engineers to proceed, since it impacted the Meramec River.

Person Struck Fatally Injured By Train

For Immediate Release
Train v Pedestrian Fatality
07/13/2025

In the late evening hours of July 12th, train engineers with BNSF railroad contacted 911 dispatch center to advise they had struck a pedestrian in an isolated area along the tracks between Leasburg and Bourbon. The train stopped as quickly as it could and reported the pedestrian strike location to law-enforcement.

Deputies with the sheriff’s office were first on the scene, conducted a search of the tracks and located the subject. Unfortunately, the subject was deceased, and our office was then contacted.

When our office arrived at the scene, we began our investigation of the collision site. Due to the remoteness of the location, and the absence of lighting; processing and investigating the scene was difficult. But we want to give a special thank you to the Leasburg Fire Department for their additional assistance in lighting and decontamination of the scene.

These types of cases do not happen often, but when they do, it’s a coordinated effort between many agencies. The response and subsequent investigation was made easier and more successful with the agencies involved. Our office could not successfully conduct our mission if it were not for the level of professionalism of other agencies involved we want to thank, Crawford 911,Crawford County Sheriff's Office, Missouri,North Crawford County Ambulance District, Missouri Highway Patrol BNSF Railway, Cuba, Missouri Police Dept and again, Leasburg Fire Department.

The name of the person struck by the train is not being released as of this posting because we do not have verification that next-of-kin have been notified.
