Quite a while back you may remember (or not) a video clip we posted that was audio only. It was simply titled "Bush Boys 1". The musical quartet was recorded near the Serengeti plain with a single microphone under pretty bad conditions, but it worked out well enough that I decided to bring two mics and stands to recorded them this year. This is the first of several songs and this one includes a Maasai choir of sorts. Most of these people see each other less than once a year, but they sound as though they've been singing together daily. This speaks to the life and tradition of the Maasai people despite the modern world that is quickly enchroaching. The title was unclear, perhaps lost in translation. Greatness shows up in some pretty unexpected places. I was bumming around Moshi Tanzania where you can't walk 5 feet without someone trying to sell you some mass produced artwork. The vast majority of the paintings you see look virtually identical and I really don't care for any of them. For whatever reason when the subject of this video jumped up off the curb and rendered the company line "rafiki, come and see my shop" I decided to go. I'm glad I did. https://vimeo.com/53631488

Your gratitude is felt in the overwhelming response to this veritable feast of filmic allegory. Its deep and powerful meaning will certainly touch the lives of many more. I spent a career in the military shooting video in some of the best and worst places imaginable and the one thing that was consistent throughout was the fact that I was always in the presence of greatness. Whether it was the grunt with the indomitable spirit and generous heart or the natural born leader who understood the pressure of being responsible for a mission that may cost that grunt his life they were equally great in my eyes. Working with the folks at MUSC is like that for me and what's even better is that my wife and daughter get to experience their greatness with me, and no one is shooting at us. Thank God for the privilege of doing what we do.
