MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - (Tuesday, May 26, 2026) The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office conducted enhanced traffic enforcement operations throughout Memorial Day weekend to help keep Berkeley County roadways safe during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. From May 22 through May 24, deputies focused on speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, seatbelt compliance, and other dangerous traffic violations.
During the holiday enforcement period, deputies issued a total of 150 traffic citations and 113 warnings. The violation that received the most citations was for speeding.
In addition to traffic enforcement efforts, the traffic unit also made arrests and investigations involving:
โข 2 arrests for wanted subjects
โข 2 ICE warrants
โข 1 habitual traffic offender case
โข 1 possession of a stolen dirt bike case
A total of 11 vehicles and motorbikes were towed during the enforcement period.
Deputies are also pleased to report that there were no fatal crashes reported in Berkeley County during the Memorial Day enforcement period. During the weekend, deputies recovered a stolen dirt bike that was being operated by a juvenile in the Carnes Crossroads Publix parking lot. Several additional E-bikes were stopped throughout the holiday weekend, and parents were contacted to respond to the scene and take possession of both the juveniles and the bikes.
Sheriff Duane Lewis praised deputies for their proactive enforcement efforts and thanked residents who made responsible decisions over the holiday weekend.
โMemorial Day weekend is a time for families and friends to gather, but it is also one of the deadliest travel weekends of the year,โ Sheriff Lewis stated. โOur deputies remained committed to keeping our roadways safe through education and enforcement. We appreciate the many drivers who chose to slow down, buckle up, and drive responsibly.โ
The Berkeley County Sheriffโs Office reminds motorists that traffic safety remains a year-round priority. Residents are encouraged to obey speed limits, avoid distracted driving, never drive impaired, and always wear a seatbelt.
