For the last eleven months, GRIEF has been a constant presence in my life.
I’ve grieved the end of my marriage. The life I imagined for myself & my kids. Our home. The man I thought I knew. The person I was before all of this and even the person I was before I got married.
GRIEF doesn’t arrive in just one way. It comes in waves, in different shapes and colors. Some days I can name it. Other days, I can only sing my way through it.
Sara Bareilles’s new album GOOD GRIEF has helped me do that. Last night, she spoke about allowing ourselves to go into the dark and remembering that we can come back. We may move back and forth for a while. Eventually, the stretches between those waves grow longer, and GRIEF becomes a passenger rather than the whole journey.
I’ve been holding on to that.
Especially yesterday at her concert… on the day that would have been my 5 year wedding anniversary, no less.
Music has always been one of my languages. When I can’t find the words for what I’ve lost, singing helps me feel it, move through it, and find my way back.
Singing can be this for you too!
