See y’all at USC Sumter this weekend! Come celebrate this Sumter legend!
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO BOBBY RICHARDSON’S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND GRACEBALL SCREENING THIS SATURDAY, AUG. 23! AND IT’S FREE!
Sumter is celebrating the 90th birthday of its greatest son this weekend at Dr. C. Leslie Carpenter Auditorium in the Nettles Building at USC Sumter, and all are welcome.
Bobby Richardson's birthday festivities will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, and will feature a screening of "Graceball: The Story of Bobby Richardson." There will also be a special meet and greet with the Yankee legend.
Richardson caught the attention of the world when he starred for the New York Yankees in the '50s and '60s. He won three titles with the Bronx Bombers but made his name in a losing effort, as he is the only World Series MVP to play for the losing side, a feat he accomplished in 1960.
Richardson won five straight Gold Gloves for his impeccable defense at second base and was an eight-time All-Star. After his playing days, he breathed life into the South Carolina baseball program, leading the Gamecocks to their first College World Series in 1975.
