A Sumter County councilman with a history of getting involved in Sumter School District affairs now is proposing a magnet school, but the area's school board member says he "needs to back off."

During the spring, Sumter County Council District 1 Council Member Carlton Washington crafted a Rafting Creek Elementary School magnet school initiative proposal with new educational offerings tied to career clusters. Since then, he has assembled a committee to promote the plan.

In an eight-page court order released by Fourteenth Judicial Circuit on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 8, the court found that Sumter County is “best suited” for the retrial of disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh.

The court stated “Sumter County is an appropriate venue for the retrial” as Murdaugh would have an “appropriate forum” to receive a fair trial.

The county would also offer security measures, courtroom facilities and technological capabilities necessary for the safe, orderly and efficient conduct of these proceedings, the order stated.

The retrial is set for April 2027.
