Kids and their families were able to get up close to vehicles in our community that keep us safe during severe weather and emergencies at the second Touch A Truck: Storm Readiness at Sumter County Civic Center, 700 W. Liberty St. The free event for all ages included numerous activities, face painting, food trucks and interactive experiences designed to help families better understand storm preparedness.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS:

The Republican race for the commissioner of agriculture nomination has been cut in half and is headed to a runoff between a Clemson man and a son of Clarendon County.

Cody Simpson, a Columbia resident whose family has a generational farm in Clarendon County, and Danny Ford, a Clemson resident, each earned just under 40% of the vote in the primary election on June 9. They will face each other in a runoff June 23.

In the race for U.S. House District 5, Mallory Dittmer defeated Andrew Clough to win the Democratic nomination for Congress on Tuesday and will face Republican nominee Wes Climer in the November general election.

Dittmer captured 55.47% of total votes compared to Clough’s 44.53%. The unofficial tallies were 23,297 votes for Dittmer and 18,700 votes for Clough.

Lt. Gov. Pamela Evettte and Attorney General Alan Wilson will face off later this month in a runoff after receiving the most votes in a crowded race for the Republican nomination for South Carolina’s next governor.

With nearly 85% of counties reporting their totals Tuesday night, June 9, Evette had received 29.3% to Wilson’s 26%. With none of the six active candidates earning a majority of votes, a runoff is necessary.

PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS:

Michele Demery won the Democratic primary for State House District 64 on Tuesday night and will be the party’s nominee against State Rep. Fawn Pedalino, R-Manning, in the November general election.

Demery took 65.89% of total votes over Jack Spann’s 34.11%. The unofficial tallies were 2,874 votes for Demery and 1,488 votes for Spann. The results will be certified later this week, according to officials.
