At least six people were killed and 21 others injured after a violent clash between members of the Angaac and Riic clans in Duk Padiet town, Duk County, Jonglei State, local authorities said.
Duk County Commissioner John Chatim told reporters the confrontation was sparked by a revenge killing. He said a man from the Angaac clan allegedly shot dead a man linked to the Riic clan after believing the victim was involved in the earlier killing of a relative.
“The one who was killed hails from Gawer, but his mother is from Riic, while the one who killed him is from Lou, but his mother is from Angaac. Both are living in Duk and have become part of the community,” Chatim said.
The dispute escalated into a wider fight that left three people dead from each clan and 21 injured, the commissioner said. Security forces later intervened and restored calm.
Chatim urged residents to remain calm and warned against further revenge attacks while authorities work to prevent renewed violence.
The attack is the latest in a series of communal clashes in Jonglei State, where long-running feuds and retaliatory killings have frequently sparked deadly confrontations.
