Just last week, the Holdrege Citizen announced it would be closing.
This week, thanks to the incredible support of Syndicate Publishing, the Hastings Tribune, and the Nebraska Press Association team — from Dennis working with Bob to explore paths forward to Violet and Peggy stepping up behind the scenes — the Citizen will continue publishing weekly while seeking new ownership.
In a time when so many headlines are about newspapers shutting down, this is a powerful example of what can happen when local papers, press associations, and their members work together.
We are truly Better by Association.
And the real winners? The community of Holdrege.
Studies show the many negative impacts a town faces when it loses its newspaper — and thanks to this collective effort, Holdrege will continue to have its living history recorded each week.

Holdrege Citizen to continue publishing weekly
After announcing last week that The Holdrege Citizen would cease publication as of September 4th, Publisher-owner Bob King has announced he will continue to publish weekly while seeking a buyer for the newspaper. The weekly newspaper will be published each Thursday going forward.
Today’s edition has a different look – but that is thanks to neighboring newspapers that have stepped up to assist The Citizen in continuing to publish weekly despite loss of staff and major equipment failures. Those newspapers assisting are Syndicate Publishing Co, publishers of the Gothenburg Leader, the Cozad Local, Calloway Courier and Minden Courier; also, assisting are the Hastings Tribune, the Valley Voice News in Cambridge, and the office of the Nebraska Press Association in Lincoln.
King said continuing to publish The Citizen will allow the community to be served with a community newspaper under new ownership. No estimate of time was given for finding a buyer but King said he has had multiple calls in the past week since he first announced intentions to cease publication.
"The other area newspapers have been very helpful in helping to keep The Citizen alive as an on-going, legal status publication. We appreciate them stepping up to help us at a time when lack of staffing and equipment issues made it virtually impossible to keep going on our own. We will be able to publish weekly, thanks to their help, and will pursue a new buyer with urgency,” King said.
The office at 418 Garfield Street will continue to remain open with current office hours; anyone with questions should call Bob or Amy at 308-995-4441. Ads and public notices can be sent to: [email protected] and news items can be sent to [email protected].
The Holdrege Citizen is in its 141st year, having first published in 1884. It is the only newspaper located in Phelps County.
