This column is always a good opportunity to tell a good story. This is not the usual story like Beach Haven locals paddling to an outer shoal during Hurricane Belle in 1976 or the story of when the Trans Megetti played the Ketch in 2000 and all hell broke loose in the best possible way.

When Lisa Willoughby’s children were young, they would collect broken and discarded kites to fix throughout the quiet winter months on Long Beach Island so they could fly them on a Surf City beach in the summer. Often, they gave away their kites for free to others in hopes they would fall in love with kite flying and creating memories.

There’s been a lot of change in Barnegat Light recently with the sale of White’s and with Kelly’s and Mustache Bill’s up for sale again. Having no dog in the fight, I’ve enjoyed the Facebook comments on the postings, most of which were people reminiscing about how meaningful these places were to them and recounting favorite meals or wait staff or first jobs or even meeting a future spouse there. All beautiful sentiments.

The new owners of White’s Market in Barnegat Light, who have not yet revealed their identities publicly but are collectively called Barnegat City LLC according to the deed filed with Ocean County on Sept. 10, have begun to make changes at the site, as chronicled in the Save White’s Market Facebook group by White Whale Motel owner George Benedict. The roughly $3 million sale closed Sept. 2. Mark Reynolds Project Management is handling the renovations.
