Tonight's film at Foreign Film Friday is : Portrait of a Lady on Fire, the 2019 Frech Film by Céline Sciamma that won 59 awards and 155 Nominations around the world.
This film's cinematography is beyond perfect. Every scene appears as though it was taken out of a masterpiece painting. The only other work I recall even close to its visual poetry is Barry Lyndon. Every actor, especially the two leads, have done their job amazingly. Watch it if you haven't. This movie is art at its finest.

Tonight, Friday Aug 28, Foreign Film Friday presents: Viridiana by Luis Bunuel, 1961, 2 Wins, Mexico and Spain. Comedy/ Drama.
The poor nun is one of the last of the true believers who adhere's to the dogma of the Church even when most of their leaders have abandoned it. Even the poor masses (whom she relies on) fail her. Can she remain true to her faith when everyone else around her ignores it?

Juliet of the Spirits--Federico Fellini, 1965, Drama, Italy. 2 Oscar Nominations, 12 wins, 3 nominations
Juliet of the Spirits has become one of my favorite Fellini films. The story involves a woman who discovers that her husband is cheating on her. The forces of family, tradition, the church, and an immoral society all pull at her and force her to make a difficult decision. These forces would be banal in a standard film but Fellini chooses to visualize them as images and dreams. The dream sequences are nearly perfect and create a sharp sense of the hazy logic and unreality of dreams

Tonight: The Magic Flute, 7pm at the Flood Gallery, 802 Fairview Rd, Suite 1200. Ingmar Bergman, 1975, 3 wins, 1 Oscar nom.
A production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute" is presented, this film which blurs the lines of it as a stage production - not only with aspects of the theater stage shown, but also the occasional shot of the audience members watching it, and the performers going through their backstage routines during intermission - and a movie as the set moves out from the confines of the stage.

Besotted with cheap crime fiction, cinema, and popular culture, bored-to-death English language students Franz and Arthur love living in a dream world. But more than anything, the two layabouts fancy themselves a gang. In the meantime, Franz and Arthur vie for Odile's attention. And when their romantic classmate tips them off about a mountain of cash stashed in an unlocked cabinet in Aunt Victoria's suburban Joinville-le-Pont house, it's game on. As the amateur criminals take an immediate interest in Odile's incidental mention, they devise a plan and iron out the details of an audacious robbery--just like in the movies. However, what happens if Arthur's uncle and all-powerful love stand in the way of the perfect heist?
