Syracuse’s Inner Harbor has come a long way — from a 1918 canal terminal once nicknamed “Oil City” to one of the city’s fastest-changing waterfronts, with a brand-new aquarium opening this fall.

A lot of the action lives under one roof at the Iron Pier building: a brewery with 24 taps and a full kitchen, a cocktail bar, a coffee-and-breakfast spot, an infrared yoga and pilates studio, and a salon. Just beyond it, a 1950s diner institution, stone-fired pizza, and a creekwalk that runs all the way to Armory Square.

We pulled together some Inner Harbor spots worth checking out, from breweries and cocktail bars, to coffee and waterfront trails, and other local favorites.

We stopped by the Get Smashed pop-up in Eastwood and WOW! Burgers, pierogies, mac salad, and pickles were all mouth watering good 🤤

They’ll be set up slinging burgers again on Sunday 8/9 from 12pm-6ish on the corner of Lillian and James St.

Is it okay to eat smash burgers two days in row? Asking for a friend 😂

Just west of Syracuse, the neighboring communities of Solvay and Westvale share a history rooted in the soda ash plant that opened on Onondaga Lake back in 1884.

The families who came to work it, many of them Italian immigrants from the Alps, gave the area a character it still carries today: Polish sweets, family-run pizza, a restored tavern turned ice cream shop, neighborhood pubs, a historic library, and a European market.

We pulled together some Solvay and Westvale spots worth checking out, from bakeries and ice cream, to pizza and neighborhood pubs, and other local favorites.

Just west of Syracuse, Camillus keeps its Erie Canal history alive and well.

Replica boat rides across a restored 1840s aqueduct, a walkable Main Street full of local shops, a CNY coffee roaster, a fantasy bookshop, a boutique or two, and a splash pad the kids can run through all summer long.

We pulled together some Camillus spots worth checking out, from the park and local coffee, to bookshops and boutiques, and other local favorites.

We explored the Northside — but one pocket of it deserved a post all its own.

Meet Hawley-Green, Syracuse’s arts district: a stretch of pastel Victorian “painted ladies” that’s been on the National Register since 1979, home to a free social-justice gallery, an abolitionist-built mansion that once sheltered the Underground Railroad, and a canonized saint’s shrine open to the public.

We pulled together some Hawley-Green spots worth checking out, from art galleries and historic landmarks, to Irish pubs and neighborhood cafes, and other local favorites.

The Northside has been Syracuse’s front door for new arrivals for over a century.

Once the heart of the city’s Little Italy, it’s now a neighborhood where Italian bread pulled from an 1895 oven shares the block with Vietnamese pho, Ethiopian and Eritrean cooking, Jamaican jerk, and Puerto Rican comfort food.

We pulled together some Northside spots worth checking out, from century-old bakeries and Italian imports, to flavors from all over the world, and other local favorites.
