Children’s books are in demand, but choosing how and who to publish with greatly matters. 📚✨

In Episode 9, J and Lo talk about the children’s book space and what authors should consider before deciding between traditional publishing, self-publishing, or working with a service publisher.

Traditional publishing may be worth exploring, as agents and publishers are looking for strong stories in that space, and for some authors, that route can open important doors. But it also comes with things to watch out for.

Depending on the publisher, you may not always have control over your illustrator, the creative direction, and other limitations. It’s important to understand the details before signing anything.
Ask questions, read the terms carefully, and be clear on what kind of control, support, and flexibility you want as an author.

There is no one perfect publishing path for every children’s book. The best choice depends on your story, your goals, your budget, and the kind of author experience you want to have.

Tax season is a lot less stressful when you haven’t spent the whole year guessing where your money went.

💡Tip 85: Track your expenses for taxes.

As an author, your book is not just a creative project, it can also become part of your business. That means keeping track of what you spend matters.

Editing, design, marketing, website costs, event fees, travel, supplies, software, book inventory, and even vendor table materials can all add up quickly. When you track your expenses as you go, you make it easier to understand your numbers, prepare for tax season, and make smarter decisions for your author business.

And if the business side of authorship feels overwhelming, this is one of the reasons the upcoming Authorpreneur Workshop on August 22-23, is so valuable.
Jess Neiding, one of the attending experts, will be sharing support around finances, contracts, editing, ideation, and the author business details that are easy to overlook but so important to understand.

If you grew up with books like "Beverly Cleary", "Donald Duck", "Jack and the Beanstalk", or "How to Eat Fried Worms", this part of Episode 9 will probably take you back. ✨

In this clip, Jess and Laura reminisce about the children’s books many of the 40+ grew up reading, back when it felt like everyone had the same small set of stories that somehow became part of childhood.

Jess talks about going through her brother’s things and finding a box marked “He-Man,” only to open it and discover old books from their childhood tucked inside, with her name still written in them.

It’s a sweet reminder of how powerful children’s books can be. They stay with us for years, even decades, carrying memories of who we were, where we read them, and the little worlds we escaped into.

This conversation also opens up a bigger discussion about children’s books today, how much the space has grown, and the many different paths authors now have to bring stories for young readers into the world.

Sometimes the best opportunities happen when you step away from the screen and show up in the room.

💡Tip 72: Attend book fairs and conventions.

Book fairs, conventions, and author events give you the chance to meet readers, connect with other authors, learn from industry conversations, and see how other creatives are presenting their work.

These events can also help you build confidence. The more you practice talking about your book, setting up your table, answering questions, and introducing yourself as an author, the more natural it starts to feel.

That’s exactly why the Authorpreneur Workshop and Book Fair is such a valuable opportunity for authors.

Alongside the workshop sessions, the book fair-style setup gives authors and creatives a chance to showcase their books, connect with the community, and get hands-on experience presenting their work in person.
Being an author is not only about writing the book. It is also about learning how to show up, share your story, and build real connections around your work. ✨
