Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee has introduced six articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., filing the measure as H.Res. 1309 in the 119th Congress.
The resolution accuses Roberts of allowing the Supreme Court to become increasingly political, citing decisions such as Rucho v. Common Cause, Citizens United, and Trump v. United States, which granted former presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution.
Cohen also alleges that Roberts failed to recuse himself from cases involving law firms that reportedly paid his wife millions in recruiting fees and questions whether all personal assets were properly disclosed.
While the proposal has drawn attention, no sitting Supreme Court justice has ever been removed through impeachment, and the resolution faces significant hurdles in the Republican-controlled House.
