In August 1967, Glacier National Park became the site of a historic tragedy when food-conditioned grizzly bear movements culminated in the infamous "Night of the Grizzlies." On the night of August 12–13, 1967, two separate grizzly bears, conditioned by decades of open trash dumping, fatally attacked two 19-year-old campers, Julie Helgeson and Michele Koons, in completely different sections of the park. This single night shattered the park's 57-year history of zero fatal bear attacks and completely transformed modern wildlife management across the United States.

He woke up completely disoriented, barefoot, and trapped under a piece of plastic that had been covered with dirt and heavy rocks. He stated that what actually jarred him back to consciousness was the sound and feeling of four dingoes scratching and pawing frantically at the black plastic sheet covering him. After managing to scare the wild dogs away and crawl out of the hole, he realized he was completely abandoned, his shoes were missing, and his car was nowhere to be seen. His supplies, and most possessions were gone. He had no map, water, food, and no idea of his location.

Commanders tolerated (and relied on) his garrison rebelliousness because, in combat, he was exceptionally effective: a natural tactician, resilient under chaos, and able to rally and lead mixed or depleted groups to achieve objectives. He acted as section sergeant, platoon sergeant, and even acting first sergeant despite remaining a private for much of the war due to demotions. His superiors (including some who later admitted it) recognized he was a nightmare in garrison but a natural, fearless leader in the field—prioritizing mission success over regulations. This "anti-hero" dynamic is why he wasn't discharged despite the repeated attempts.
