Yakima’s Yahritza y Su Esencia are celebrating another major milestone after earning two nominations at the Latin Grammys.

The sibling group reflected on their journey from making music with a guitar and dreams of helping their parents to now receiving recognition from the Latin Recording Academy.

In a statement, the group thanked their family, team, collaborators and fans who have supported them since the beginning. They also thanked the artists who contributed to their METAMORFOSIS project and gave a special shoutout to Rosalia and her team for allowing them to be part of “LA PERLA,” which earned one of the nominations.

“We’ll continue making music with the same love, passion and humility that we started with,” the group said.

The nominations add another major accomplishment for the Yakima-raised trio as they continue representing Central Washington on one of Latin music’s biggest stages.

Two people are dead after an early-morning shooting and crash in Seattle’s Rainier Valley neighborhood.

Seattle police said dispatchers began receiving reports of a crash near Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Graham Street shortly after 2:42 a.m. Seattle Fire Department crews arrived first and called for police after finding a vehicle that had crashed over the curb.

Officers found a man and woman inside the vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics attempted to save both victims, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Seattle Police Department homicide detectives are investigating what led up to the shooting. Police said no suspect is currently in custody, but detectives are also not searching for any outstanding suspects at this time.

The investigation temporarily suspended Link 1 Line service between Columbia City and Othello stations early Saturday morning. Regular service has since resumed.

A Thurston County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputy has been fired after an internal investigation found the deputy failed to investigate a reported domestic violence incident and misrepresented what the woman involved had told them.

According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy responded July 12 after a woman reported that her partner had physically assaulted and threatened her earlier that day. Despite those statements being captured on body camera footage, the deputy did not investigate further or file a case report.

The deputy instead wrote in the call log that the woman reported “no assault, no property damage, no threats.” The sheriff’s office said its investigation determined that entry was an untruthful misrepresentation of what occurred.

Two days later, the woman disappeared under what investigators described as suspicious circumstances, prompting a missing person investigation. Detectives reviewing the earlier encounter discovered the body camera footage. The woman was ultimately located unharmed on July 15.

The deputy was placed on administrative leave and, after the allegations were substantiated through an internal investigation, was terminated Sept. 15.

The sheriff’s office also notified the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission and submitted a Brady notice to prosecutors regarding the sustained finding involving dishonesty.

The organization representing the deputy has filed a grievance seeking reinstatement. The sheriff’s office said it will issue an update if the termination is overturned.

Doctor Doom made an unexpected appearance at Seattle City Hall this week, with a local activist dressing as the Marvel supervillain to deliver a sarcastic warning about the city’s growing use of surveillance technology.

Clifford Cawthon, a policy advisor for the Washington State Department of Commerce and member of the activist group Community Not Cameras, appeared in costume during Tuesday’s Seattle City Council Public Safety Committee meeting.

Speaking as Doom, Cawthon sarcastically claimed he had taken control of law enforcement technology company Axon and was now “watching you,” using the character to raise concerns about how surveillance data could potentially be used against immigrants and people seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care.

The protest targeted Seattle’s use of technology including automatic license plate readers and its Real-Time Crime Center, which can bring together information from cameras, body cameras, dispatch systems, officer locations and other sources.

Privacy advocates have increasingly criticized license plate reader networks over the amount of location data collected on vehicles belonging to people who are not suspected of crimes. Law enforcement agencies, meanwhile, use the technology as an investigative tool to locate vehicles and develop leads in criminal cases.

Cawthon said he got the idea after another activist recently appeared at a San Diego City Council meeting dressed as Darth Vader to similarly protest surveillance technology.

Dozens of Seattle-area business leaders are calling on Mayor Katie Wilson and the City Council to adopt a 100-day public safety action plan, increase police patrols and restore surveillance cameras in high-event areas.

A letter signed by 38 business leaders, including executives from Microsoft, Starbucks, Costco, Nordstrom, the Seattle Mariners and Alaska Air Group, calls for measurable goals and monthly progress reports as the city faces continued concerns over crime, police staffing and emergency response times.

The coalition is asking Seattle to restore surveillance cameras in Pioneer Square, the Stadium District and other high-event areas, expand foot and bicycle patrols in areas with persistent safety problems, recommit to a seven-minute 911 response standard and prioritize shutting down open-air drug markets.

The letter also calls for treatment and shelter to be offered first to people involved in public drug use, followed by arrest and prosecution for those who repeatedly refuse assistance. Business leaders are additionally seeking a ban on camping within 250 feet of parks, playgrounds and schools.

The group cited an August poll showing only 34% of Seattle voters surveyed were confident the city has an effective public safety plan. More than 86% supported creating a 100-day action plan, while 90% supported regular police foot and bicycle patrols in areas experiencing ongoing safety problems.

The coalition is also urging city leaders to protect and increase public safety funding during the upcoming budget process.

Portland is emerging as one of the strongest candidates to land a Major League Baseball expansion franchise as the league moves closer to potentially adding two new teams.

According to ESPN, Portland is among six leading markets being discussed for expansion, alongside Salt Lake City, Nashville, Raleigh, Orlando and Montreal. Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously said he would like MLB’s two potential expansion cities — one in the West and one in the East — decided before his planned retirement in January 2029.

Portland already has two major pieces of a potential bid in place. Oregon approved up to $800 million in funding for an MLB stadium in 2025, while the Portland Diamond Project has secured a letter of intent to purchase Zidell Yards, a 33-acre site along the Willamette River, for a proposed ballpark.

The biggest missing piece is an ownership group with the financial backing necessary to fund the remainder of the stadium and an expansion fee expected to exceed $2 billion.

ESPN currently describes Salt Lake City as the favorite for the Western expansion slot, with an ownership group, stadium funding and a site already in place. Portland, however, is positioned as one of its most serious competitors if it can secure a lead investor.

MLB has not formally launched an expansion process, and no new franchises have been awarded. The league is expected to address expansion after reaching its next collective bargaining agreement.

An armed suspect was shot and killed by a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office deputy outside Evergreen Middle School in Spokane Valley on Tuesday, prompting a lockdown and large law enforcement response.

According to Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels, deputies responded around 11:30 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a suspicious person outside the school who appeared to be armed. The first deputy to arrive, a school resource officer, encountered a man matching the description within minutes.

Nowels said the man became aggressive toward the deputy and presented what appeared to be a fi***rm, prompting the deputy to open fire. Deputies provided lifesaving aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. No students or staff were reported injured.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility that the suspect himself made the original 911 call, though authorities said that had not yet been confirmed.

During the response, deputies discovered a suspicious package near the school, further delaying student reunification. A regional bomb squad rendered the package safe, and authorities later determined it was not an explosive device.

Students were transported to Valley Real Life Church to reunite with their families. The school district said counseling resources will be available for students, including those who may have witnessed the shooting.

The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave while an independent investigative team reviews the shooting.
