People often confuse manual and passive firearm safeties. A manual safety is a lever you intentionally engage, mainly for transport, storage, and non-live administrative handling, not something meant to be constantly switched during active live-fire drills. Different platforms function differently and many modern fi****ms do not even have a manual safety, which is why blanket rules about engaging it during every manipulation do not match real-world training. What actually keeps people safe is muzzle discipline, trigger control, awareness of others and the backstop, and strict adherence to the Four Rules. Passive safeties are built-in mechanical systems that operate automatically and are not the same thing as actively engaging a manual safety during drills. On a live range, safety is created by responsible handling, not blind faith in a lever.
