It has been a minute since I've been in West Texas especially the small towns. It makes me remember and takes me back to my younger career days.
As an OT manager and part of a team, we traveled with our bagged cell phones and visited all kinds of small nursing rehab centers in the small Texas towns. Marilyn and Jasmine and I were the dynamic trio... representing all three disciplines. Golden Corral and Dairy Queen was a fixture.
Coming back, Midland had a big traffic jam... Midland! Flying into Midland was a huge advertisement for a fracking company and oil wells everywhere. Many people in Marfa say the people who come now for Chainti weekend are also different. West Texas is different ,yet the same. So many people feel upset about the wall and the desecration of Big Bend. I've seen it reflecting in the art.
Looking at modern art has been interesting for me. I will now look at objects differently in their natural environment and see the sky as a backdrop. Marfa is intentional in the natural landscape and leaves things as they are- beauty in the weathering over time.
The sky is gorgeous and feels so vast. I'm reminded of the stark beauty of West Texas! Special memories with my Aunt and Sami.
