Land acknowledgements must lead to real investment

Acknowledgment without accountability loses meaning. What matters is the work that follows the words.

“We recognize that all of us at UW Tacoma learn, live, and work on or near the ancestral homeland of the Coast Salish people,” says the Office of Equity and Inclusion website. “In particular, our campus is situated on the current and traditional land of the Puyallup people.”

With the start of each quarter and even certain events there is typically a brief slide show and video presentation on land acknowledgements about the indigenous people.  But is this enough?

Review: Tacoma musical playhouse’s ‘Rainbow Fish’ charms with color, creativity and a lesson in kindness

Tacoma Musical Playhouse opens its family theatre season with a lively adaptation of the beloved children’s story “Rainbow Fish.”

Songs are an important part of musical storytelling on stage. “Rainbow Fish” has lively and expressive songs that convey the main plot of the story. The actors harmonize and vocally mesh with each other beautifully while also telling the story through facial expressions and body language.

“Rainbow Fish” matches the quality of TMP’s larger productions. It’s a brief, affordable and heartfelt musical suitable for audiences of all ages. TMP’s family productions are great for a small weekend activity for anyone.

The one man “No Kings” protest at Nisqually Wildlife Refuge

While the No Kings protests of October gathered millions, one Washington man staged his own.

On Oct. 18, a reported 7 million Americans took to the streets to participate in a “No Kings” protest to voice their discontent with the Trump administration, with protests happening across all 50 states.
Some of these gatherings in large cities such as Boston and New York City included an estimated 100,000 participants. But at Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Andrew Mobley protested alone.

“The people who visit the refuge could be a tree-hugging wildlife lover or they could be some conservative gun owner who hunts ducks in Texas. All of us can agree that we’re not going to have ducks to look at or even hunt if we don’t protect them.” -Andrew Mobley

Mobley staged his protest on the federal property of the wildlife refuge and directly under the flagpole flying the stars and stripes, with his poster that read, “A great nation keeps its promises.”

When asked about what gives him hope in this moment of uncertainty and chaos, Mobley said, “every time we’ve had one of these crises, our country has come out better. I have to have some optimism that we can do better.”

Take action: make an informed vote this November

Voting in the general election Nov 4th is one of the best ways to ensure candidates make it to the representative seat. But voting without researching your ballot can be riskier than not voting at all!

Students sometimes think their votes don’t count, and their voices aren’t powerful enough to make real change. This is incorrect. Every vote counts, and when higher education and other social services hang in the balance, every vote is critical to advocating for access to education and opportunity.

Are you registered to vote?  Register in person at 2501 S. 35th St, Suite C, Tacoma, WA, 98409 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to be eligible to vote in the Nov. 4 election or register online to be eligible for future elections.

Xbox Game Pass price hike ignites gamer backlash and tests Microsoft’s timing

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a major change: the top-tier Game Pass Ultimate will rise from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, a 50% increase.

The adjustment is part of a broader restructuring that renames Game Pass Core to “Essential,” Standard to “Premium,” and positions Ultimate as a top-end subscription featuring more day-one releases, higher-quality cloud streaming and new perks, according to Windows Central.

Game Pass has long been described as “Netflix for games,” but sustaining that model under the old pricing will be difficult.

Will this force gamer’s to downgrade or cancel?

UW Seattle takedown: Embarrassing or inspiring?

Reactions to UW Seattle’s classroom intrudes resurfaces the question: as the world watches, is violence hurting the message?

Most student protests have historically begun as peaceful, relying on leverage and messaging to influence administrations and the public toward a common goal, and rarely escalating without aggressive actions taken by law enforcement bodies.

What should be done whenstudents participate in acts of violence, even well-meaning, can we continue to support student protesting?
