Displaced and colonized, Boricuas in El Barrio yearned for the pastoral life they left behind, even as they endured the daily hardships of industrial urban living. While Hernández’s nostalgic “Lamento Borincano” offered a sentimental tribute, many recordings from the 1920s and ’30s reflected New York’s harsh realities, as captured in Canario’s witty, upbeat plena poking fun at “Home Relief.” Others voiced resistance to American imperialism, with protest lyrics slipping past unsuspecting American producers.
