If you’re a woman, this is a must-read. Patel lays out the state of women’s healthcare and the gaps within it in such an informative and terrifying way that it’s hard not to walk away angry. As women, our health is still far more at risk than it should be.
Through the stories of women seeking care and the people working in abortion clinics, Patel shows that women’s healthcare isn’t one issue or one experience. Every woman has a different story, and every circumstance matters. She also highlights how the overturning of Roe v. Wade didn’t just impact access to abortion care, but opened the door to broader attacks on women’s rights and healthcare.
What I really loved was how Patel balanced the heavier topics with South Asian folklore and culture woven throughout the story. The aunties and uncles showing up for the clinic were some of my favorite parts and brought moments of warmth and humor when they were needed most.
TLDR: Honestly, if you can read this and not feel angry, sad, or just all the feels, I’d be concerned. Are you okay, sis?
