Like everyone else in 2024, my timeline was completely flooded with this book. Yall would not stop talking about it. I hadn’t read any of Whitaker’s work before, but the hype got me curious enough to go to his author signing in Tampa. He was such a delight and genuinely fascinating person to listen to, and I remember thinking, if his writing is even half as good as the stories he’s telling right now, then this book is going to be DAMN good.

And it was.
And I’m bringing back Page Rage’s favorite word here: Phenomenal.

This book is nothing short of fantastic. Whitaker’s writing is very character-driven, which is my favorite, and he takes his time building a beautiful, layered story filled with rich, fully formed characters you get to watch grow and change up close. And Patch… Patch grabs you straight by the heart and refuses to let go. This book is tragic, heartbreaking, and completely unputdownable.

I needed this book in the year of our Lord 2026. Why you may ask? Because it shows MEN holding other MEN accountable for being scumbags and actually BELIEVING WOMEN when they say something untoward occured.

Overall, this book was a very cute read featuring some incredibly smart women in STEM, a fake dating trope, a ONE BED situation and all the nerdy love vibes. I also have to say, the friendships in this book were outstanding. I absolutely ADORED Holden and Adam, can I have more of their stories please?!

If you are looking for a cute, easy read to help you escape the chaos of our real world for a minute, this one is for you.
