Researchers at reported findings from a late-breaking abstract evaluating pressure-adjusted heart rate as a potential prognostic marker in severe aortic stenosis.

In a retrospective cohort of 14,409 adults with severe native aortic stenosis, higher PAHR values were associated with poorer survival under medical management. Baseline PAHR also appeared to remain associated with mortality after aortic valve replacement.

PAHR integrates heart rate, right atrial pressure, and mean arterial pressure into a single echocardiography-derived metric intended to reflect overall hemodynamic burden.

Chieh-Mei (Jessica) Tsai, MD, of Mayo Clinic, noted that PAHR may provide complementary physiologic insight, but should not be viewed as a replacement for existing approaches. External validation and prospective studies are still needed before routine clinical use.
