Today, celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not only by remembering his words, but by recommitting to the work his life demanded.
Dr. King’s leadership was rooted in courage, service, and an unwavering belief in human dignity. Honoring him means moving beyond admiration and choosing action, especially when it’s uncomfortable.
So on his birthday, consider offering these gifts in his honor:
• The Gift of Listening: Seeking to understand lived experiences different from your own.
• The Gift of Courage: Speaking up when bias or injustice shows up.
• The Gift of Service: Giving your time where help is needed most.
• The Gift of Opportunity: Mentoring, sponsoring, or opening doors for others.
• The Gift of Education: Engaging with Dr. King’s work on a deeper understanding beyond the soundbite.
• The Gift of Economic Justice: Supporting minority-owned small and community-based businesses.
• The Gift of Civic Engagement: Help someone register to vote and to understand and exercise their voice.
• The Gift of Accountability: Examining how our leadership and influence impact others.
• The Gift of Persistence: Carrying the work forward tomorrow, not just today.
Dr. King once asked:
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”
That question still stands and may we attempt to answer it with intention through our leadership, our choices, and our commitment to building a more just and inclusive world. This is especially important for those of us with influence, platforms, and proximity to power.
The greatest gift we can give is not remembrance alone, it’s action that reflects the world Dr. King imagined.
Choose one action you will commit to beyond MLK Day and hold yourself accountable to it.
If you’re willing, share in the comments:
One action you’re committing to this year in the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy.
Because Dr. King didn’t ask us to admire his legacy, he asked us to continue it.
