Elevating Human Experience through Mindful Architecture: The Trahan Architects Story

Trahan Architects, an internationally renowned architecture firm with offices in New Orleans and New York, thrives on the belief that thoughtfully designed spaces can significantly enhance the human experience.

Founded in 1992 by Victor F. “Trey” Trahan, III, FAIA, the firm has cultivated a diverse portfolio encompassing cultural, academic, athletic, residential, and ecological projects. Landmark endeavors include the Coca-Cola Stage at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, and conservation efforts in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Corcovado National Park in Chile.

Rooted in New Orleans with a global outlook from New York, Trahan Architects has earned the distinction of being named the top design firm by Architect Magazine, the official publication of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Trahan Architects' philosophy centers on understanding, empathy, and compassion, which shape their innovative design approach. They view each project as part of a unique ecosystem, employing artistic expression, technical innovation, and mindful material selection to create socially impactful, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing designs. This ethos has garnered them over 100 national, regional, and local awards, including five National AIA Awards.

Their design success stems from a commitment to creating structures that reflect the individuality of people’s lives. By fostering open dialogue with clients, colleagues, and the surrounding context, Trahan Architects continually explores how their work can contribute to the well-being of ecologies, communities, and landscapes. Through compassion, conscience, and curiosity, they strive to uncover meaningful responses that redefine beauty and resonate over time.

Trailblazer in Architecture: Kimberly Nelson Montague

Kimberly Montague, a proud graduate of the University of Michigan – Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, embarked on her career in healthcare design at Albert Kahn Associates. Her passion for innovative, patient-centered design truly ignited globally while working as an architect for Planetree International, an international healthcare consulting firm.

There, she conducted over 400 design and organizational assessments, impacting nearly two million patients, caregivers, and families across the United States, The Netherlands, Brazil, and Japan. This commitment to patient-centered design was deeply personal, inspired by her mother's battle with cancer in the hospital.

Recently, Albert Kahn Associates has appointed Montague as its first female CEO. She becomes only the 12th CEO in the firm's storied nearly 130-year history, while also retaining her title as President. Montague's leadership is a beacon of change, heralding a new era for the iconic architectural, engineering, planning, design, and management firm.

Montague's stellar reputation extends across both domestic and international design industries, honed over a 30-year career that includes tenures at Albert Kahn Associates and Herman Miller. She is known for her dedication to research, design thinking, industry advocacy, prolific presentations, and writings.

“Innovation and collaboration are in the firm’s DNA. Our teams continually hone their craft to deliver extraordinary projects for a diverse range of clients. As a champion for mentorship and inclusivity, I am passionate about setting Kahn up for another 100 years of success,” explained Kimberly.

With Montague at the helm, the future of Albert Kahn Associates looks brighter than ever.
