🌀📊 Understanding Hurricane Categories — It’s More Than Just Wind
Not all hurricanes are created equal — but every category can be dangerous. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale helps us measure the storm's wind strength, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
🌪️ Category 1 (74–95 mph): Minimal damage? Think again — downed trees, power outages, and roof damage are common.
🌪️ Category 2 (96–110 mph): Strong winds that can cause major damage to homes and snap power lines.
🌪️ Category 3 (111–129 mph): Considered a major hurricane — expect devastating damage and long-term power outages.
🌪️ Category 4 (130–156 mph): Catastrophic — roofs torn off, most trees down, areas uninhabitable for weeks.
🌪️ Category 5 (157+ mph): Total devastation — very few structures can withstand this kind of force.
🛑 REMEMBER: The category only measures wind speed it does NOT account for storm surge, flooding, or rainfall, which are often the deadliest parts of a hurricane.
Stay alert. Don’t underestimate any storm.
