Color correction gets overwhelming when you try to fix EVERYTHING at once. 👀 Redken

The biggest thing I teach when it comes to corrective color is this: solve ONE problem at a time.

When you’re looking at the canvas, ask yourself what the problem is FIRST:

1️⃣ Too dark
2️⃣ Too light
3️⃣ Too warm
4️⃣ Too cool

That’s it.

Where we get ourselves into trouble is trying to lighten, neutralize, add dimension, shift the tone AND create the final result all in one step!!

And if this is the kind of education you love, come spend THREE DAYS with me & Julie Lahr at the Redken Exchange in New York City in 2027! 🗽❤️

📍 March 8–10, 2027
📍 October 25–27, 2027

We’re going DEEP into color, formulation, problem solving and becoming more confident behind the chair.

In the meantime, write this down and save this for your next color correction. SalonCentric

Picking 7 shades for one formula doesn’t make you more creative. It makes your formulation harder to control. 😬

One of the biggest ways to become a stronger colorist is to simplify your formulations and be intentional with every shade you choose.

When you’re mixing 5, 6, or 7 different shades together, ask yourself: What is each one actually contributing to the formula?

Because the more shades you add:
✨ The harder it becomes to predict the result
✨ The harder it is to replicate at their next appointment
✨ The harder it is to troubleshoot what worked or didn’t
✨ And what happens when you’re out of ONE of those seven shades next time?

Now you’re trying to reverse engineer your own formula. 🫠

Shades EQ has 100+ intermixable shades. I promise, you can create almost every result you’re looking for with three shades or less.

Instead of asking, “What else can I add?” start asking:What’s does this formula actually NEED?

Creativity isn’t about how many colors are in the bowl. It’s understanding color well enough to know which ones actually need to be there.

Ever wondered about the science behind why the new Shades EQ XL must be stored upright? 🔬

In this episode of BTS: Behind The Science with Blake Reed Evans, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about Redken’s Shades EQ XL and how oxidation works.

The second you turn Shades EQ XL on its side; more oxygen can interact with the product. That’s why Redken recommends storing the product upright to maintain the integrity. 🩷

Let’s talk Redken Blonde IQ™ 5 Anti-Brass High-Lifts. Available at SalonCentric

This is a permanent high-lift color designed to give you up to 5 levels of synchronized LIFT + TONE in ONE step on virgin hair or natural regrowth.

Here’s why that matters behind the chair:

✨ Up to 5 levels of lift
Instead of lifting first and toning second, Blonde IQ 5 is lifting AND depositing tone during the same process.

🧪 Advanced Neutralization Technology
The formula is calibrated with both lifting power AND toning dyes so neutralization happens as the hair is lifting, helping you create controlled, dimensional blondes.

🎨 9 intermixable shades
From cool to neutral, you can customize your formula based on the natural starting level + the underlying pigment you KNOW you’re going to expose.

💡 WHEN would I reach for it?
virgin hair + natural regrowth when your goal is beautiful blonde without necessarily needing the power of traditional lightener.

My biggest reminder: HIGH LIFT COLOR IS STILL COLOR…
That means we have to formulate based on:
NATURAL LEVEL ➡️ DESIRED LEVEL ➡️ UNDERLYING PIGMENT ➡️ DESIRED TONE.

MIX: 1:2 with Redken Pro-Oxide Cream Developer
DEVELOPER: 20, 30 or 40 volume
PROCESS: Up to 45 minutes at room temperature. NO HEAT.

Do you every use high lift?

Here are 3 things I wish more hairstylists understood:

Let me show you some tips featuring Redken Extreme Length line.

1. Be authentic.
Your guests can tell when you’re recommending something because you genuinely believe it will help their hair vs. because you’re trying to hit a retail goal. Education will always feel better than a sales pitch.

2. YOU are more influential than some random “influencer.”
Think about it. Your guest trusts you enough to literally put their hair in your hands. They’re much more likely to take a recommendation from the person who actually knows their hair than someone they saw using a product on TikTok.

3. Be consistent, and tell them WHY you picked it for THEM.
Not because it’s your favorite.
Not because it’s what you use at home.
Not because “everyone needs this.”

✨ “I picked this for you because you mentioned your color fades quickly, and this is going to help protect the investment you just made today.”

That one sentence completely changes the conversation.

Retail isn’t about convincing someone to buy more stuff. It’s about giving your guest the tools they need to maintain the results you created once they leave your chair

Unpopular opinion: we have to stop blaming “box color” for everything that goes wrong with hair. 👀

“But what about metallic salts?”

WHAT ABOUT THEM?!

Metallic salts are uncommon in modern home hair color. They are primarily found in progressive gray-reducing products, not automatically in every box of color from the drugstore.

“But it was BLACK box dye!”

Black does not automatically equal metallic salts either.

Ingredient-wise, the biggest names to watch for are bismuth citrate, silver nitrate, silver acetate, lead acetate and copper salts. Today, you’re most likely to encounter bismuth citrate or silver nitrate in gradual gray-restoring products.

PPD, PTD, resorcinol and hydrogen peroxide are NOT metallic salts. Those are ingredients associated with traditional oxidative hair color.

Box color can create challenges, but “box dye” is not a scientific diagnosis. Ask better questions, check the ingredients, evaluate the canvas and STRAND TEST.

We cannot make better decisions behind the chair if we keep repeating salon folklore as hair science. 👏

Ever wondered what’s the science behind the advanced neutralization technology in Blonde IQ? 🔬

In this episode of BTS: Behind The Science with Blake Reed Evans, I’m breaking down all you need to know about Redken’s advanced neutralization technology and how it works.

Advanced neutralization technology is an Intelligent dual-action oil-powered system calibrated to concentrate and guide lightening actives to the deepest level of the cortex.

Watch as I share a demonstration of how Blonde IQ efficiently drives neutralization power to the hair’s core; breaking down eumelanin and pheomelanin for your most neutralized blonde.

Anxiety is here. But anxiety is also lying to you.

Those are two things I’ve learned to tell myself when I feel anxiety creeping in, especially behind the chair.

“Anxiety is here” helps me acknowledge what I’m feeling without making it my entire identity. I’m not saying, “I AM anxious.” I’m recognizing, “Anxiety is here right now.” And just because it’s here right now doesn’t mean it’s staying forever.

“Your anxiety is lying to you” helps me question the story my brain is creating.

The client hates their hair.
I’m running behind and everyone is mad at me.
I’m not good enough.
Something is going to go wrong.
Everyone else has it together except me.

A feeling can be very real without everything that feeling is telling you being true.

And I think this conversation is especially important in the beauty industry. We’re people-service providers. We’re managing expectations, emotions, schedules, creativity, money, social media, physical exhaustion and sometimes our own personal lives, all while being expected to make someone else feel amazing.

I also want to be very clear: anxiety disorders are real, and anxiety doesn’t always have an identifiable situational “reason.” These little tools aren’t meant to minimize that or replace professional support. They’re simply tools that have helped me recognize what I’m experiencing and create a little separation between the feeling and who I am.

Anxiety may be here. But it is not my entire identity. It does not get to tell me what is true.
And just because it is here right now does not mean it will be here forever.

Thank you Mel Robbins for sparking this paradigm shift for me.

One of the biggest reasons we switched our salon to was honestly their Ads Manager.

As salon owners, we’re competing with businesses that have massive marketing budgets. What I love is that Phorest gives us access to the same type of advertising strategy that larger companies use, but in a way that’s actually built for salons.

Instead of just boosting a post and hoping for the best, I can run Meta ads (Facebook + Instagram) that:

✨ Reach our existing clients with promotions, seasonal services, or reminders to book.
✨ Find new people who are similar to our best clients, so we’re attracting the kind of guests who are most likely to become loyal, long-term clients.

If you’re spending money on ads, make sure you’re putting them in front of the right people. For us, that’s been one of the biggest game changers since moving to Phorest.
