Plum came up short against Mars in a third-place game in the WPIAL playoffs last season. From 2019 to 2021, the teams met three teams in the WPIAL finals with Mars coming out on top each time.

“Every time we play Mars it’s a battle,” said Plum coach Jamie Stewart.

Allison Porter was happy to get one in the win column against Mars. The Plum senior defender had felt enough heartbreak against the Planets in the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs.

Barbara Kelly, a lifelong resident of Plum, died on Oct. 9 from cancer, a disease she devoted much of her life to fighting. During her last months, she had the opportunity to glimpse part of her legacy: the Barbara J. Kelly RN, BSN Endowed Nursing Scholarship at CCAC.

Barbara Kelly was in her late 30s when she decided to return to school. The mother of four earned her nursing degree at the Community College of Allegheny County and went on to serve at West Penn Hospital’s oncology ward for 25 years. Kelly, a lifelong resident of Plum, died

The Mustangs scored twice in the first half and three times in the second while holding the Colts to zero shots in a 5-0 victory.

“You have to do what you need to do to take care of the first round, win the game, and move on,” said Plum coach Jamie Stewart, who saw his team fire off 27 shots, putting 16 of them on goal.

For the seventh year in a row, the Plum girls soccer team opened the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs with a Monday evening home game.
