QV’s captains this year are two seniors, defender Emma Currier and midfielder Ari Bosh, and a junior, attack/midfielder Annabel Miko.

“The captains were decided in the spring, and we’ve been preparing over the summer,” said Currier, who plays primarily as the center back on defense.

Bosh and Miko are attacking midfielders.

The Panthers advanced to the WPIAL playoffs for the fifth time in six years, reaching both the WPIAL and PIAA semifinals, and ended up 13-5-1 overall.

Sewickley allowed just 11 goals in 16 regular-season games and registered 12 shutouts, including four in the playoffs.

Sewickley Academy’s girls soccer team took pride in having a banner 2024 season in Gary Weber’s first year as the Panthers’ head coach.

“We are extremely excited to launch our first girls volleyball team this year,” said Mike Scerbo, Sewickley’s director of athletics. “We have had a tremendous turnout with 17 girls on the roster. Our goals for the year are to establish a love of the game and grow as a team.”

The Panthers, coached by Julia Arlia, will host their first home match at Means Events Center on Sept. 8 against Aliquippa, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Makenna Kamnikar placed in the top three seven times, including a first-place finish June 9 at the season-opening tournament at Ligonier Country Club.

She golfed in the girls 16-18 age division and won with an 8-over score with 11 pars and seven bogeys on the par-70 course.

In fact, Makenna and her younger brother Joseph both took home titles from Ligonier.

Both Makenna, a senior and fourth-year competitor on of the Quaker Valley boys golf team, and Joseph, a sophomore and second-year varsity player, participated in nine tournaments on the PGA Tri-State Junior Tour.

It was a challenging offseason for the Quakers, who since the end of last year anticipated playing in their season and home opener Aug. 22 against Freedom.

QV lost a 7-0 decision to Freedom in the 2024 season opener and ended the year with a 2-7 record, including a 1-5 mark in the Class 3A Western Hills Conference.

Freedom finished 1-6 in the Class 2A Midwestern Conference a year ago and 2-6 overall.

Leet officials plan to create a new memorial honoring current and former residents who serve or have served in the nation’s armed forces.

Artist renderings of a possible war memorial in Leet Township. Commission Vice President Dan Peluso said they have not decided on the memorial’s height, width and other measurements. “It’s kind of dictated by how much money we have and what do we get for that money,” Peluso said.

Council voted 8-0 Aug. 12 to award an estimated $55,100 project to Donora-based El Grande Industries, the lowest of four bidders, to fix the bricks along Chadwick Street. Councilwoman Anne Willoughby was absent.

Sewickley officials this fall plan to do the first brick restoration project in at least five years and spend about $432,500 to pave seven roads.
