Why did cherries become a Michigan staple?

It all started near Traverse City in 1852 when Presbyterian missionary Peter Dougherty planted cherry trees on Old Mission Peninsula. Turns out Michigan (and the lake climate) was basically the perfect place to grow them!

As more farmers planted orchards along the Fruit Belt, cherries became big business. Canneries, processing plants, and shipping companies helped send Michigan cherries across the country, creating jobs and turning the fruit into one of the state's biggest agricultural success stories.

Fast forward to today, and our state produces nearly 75% of the nation's tart cherries, hosts the National Cherry Festival every summer, and even named the tart cherry its official state fruit in 2019.
