Update: although unofficial, reports are coming in that the suspect was Bud May, a former Meridian police officer and former Newton Assistant Police Chief.

01/30/2025
Update: After the proper family notifications, the identity of the deceased in yesterday's incident is released as 58 year-old Winfred (Bud) May.

01/29/2025
This morning, at approximately 9:00 a.m., Sheriff Houston, in coordination with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, arrived in Smith County to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect just outside the Taylorsville area. The warrant was issued in connection with multiple sex-related crimes involving a minor that occurred in Lauderdale County, MS.

Upon making contact, the suspect emerged with a firearm. Law enforcement officers attempted negotiations, but the situation resulted in the suspect sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The individual succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating the incident. The suspect's name is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Smith County Sheriff
Joel Houston

On Monday, January 13th, 2025, all car riders will be picked up in the lower parking lot due to funeral services at the United Methodist Church. To accommodate increased traffic, we will form two parallel lines in the parking lot, as indicated by the arrows in the graphic. There will be no designated lines for specific grades, so either line is acceptable. Faculty members will es**rt all car riders to their vehicles. We kindly ask for your patience and mindfulness regarding traffic, students, and staff as you navigate through the parking lot

IMPORTANT NOTE!
Parents needing to check out their students between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM should be considerate of funeral services taking place at the Methodist Church. This may impact your parking options when accessing the upper office.

This is for Monday, January 13th only!
