Judge rules feds can’t block Illinois’ disaster funding in response to immigration laws

Ben Szalinski
Capitol News Illinois

The Trump administration cannot withhold federal emergency funding from Illinois because the state refuses to participate in federal immigration enforcement, a Rhode Island federal judge ruled on Wednesday.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January requiring the Department of Homeland Security and agencies under its command, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to stop providing federal funds to states that don’t cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

Pritzker directs agencies to limit spending in response to federal cuts

Ben Szalinski
Capitol News Illinois

Illinois agencies must identify spending reductions and create reserves in their budgets to prepare for an economic downturn, according to an executive order issued Tuesday by Gov. JB Pritzker.

Pritzker said the order is designed to combat federal policies by the Trump administration that are likely to increase costs on the state and put pressure on the economy. The latest order requires most state agencies to, within 30 days, “identify immediate spending reductions, including efficiencies that will result in reduced spending.”

Simple strategies can help save on seed costs

JASON JENKINS
DTN CROPS EDITOR

The cost of everything seems to be on the rise these days, and corn and soybean seed prices are no exception. Seed is the most expensive input for soybean production and the second-most expensive for corn production (trailing only fertilizer), according to the USDA Economic Research Service (USDA-ERS).

During the past 20 years, USDA-ERS data shows the cost of soybean seed has more than doubled, rising from an average of $32.30 per planted acre in 2006 to a forecast cost of $75.34 in 2026. Seed corn prices have nearly tripled during the same time frame, rising from $43.55 to $116.20.

While there isn’t much that farmers can do to reduce the sticker price for seed, they do have some options when it comes to controlling their total cost for this essential input.
