Rosin the Bow

This week on Rosin the Bow podcast Joe features his interview with husband and wife duo Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, award-winning Canadian fiddle players. Natalie grew up on Cape Breton Island and Donnell grew up in Ontario. They have seven children and, when not out on tour, they work on their cattle ranch. I interviewed Natalie and Donnell when they came to perform at the Washington Center for the Arts. www.rosinthebow.org or www.rosinthebow.podbean.com

Port na bPúcaí - The Fairy Tune from The Blasket Islands, Co. Kerry. A fisherman heard this music on the wind one night and played it on his fiddle. The words tell the story of a woman captured by the fairies.

Lyrics:
Port na bPúcaí

Irish:

Is bean ón slua sí mé
Do tháinig thar toinn
Is do goideadh san oíche mé
Tamall thar lear
Is go bhfuilim as riocht so
Fé gheasa mná sí
Is ní bheidh ar an saol so
Go nglaofaidh an coileach

Is caitheadsa féin
Tabhairt fén lios isteach
Ní taithneamh liom é
Ach caithfead tabhairt fé
Is a bhfuil ar an saol so
Caithfidh imeacht as
Ach béadsa ag caoineadh'n
Fhaid a bheidh uisce sa toinn
Is ná deinig aon ní
Leis an ndream thíos sa leas...

Translation"

I am a woman from the Fairies
Who has come over the waves
And I was taken at night
For a while abroad
And I am in this state
Under spell of the fairy woman
And I will not be in this world
Until the cock crows

And I must go
Into the fairy fort
It is no pleasure for me
But I must do it
And all that is in this life
Must leave it
But I will be weeping
As long as water remains in the wave
And have no dealings
With the crowd that is down in the fairy fort...

"Although I live approximately 4000 miles from Ireland, the Bitesize Irish singing course offers a direct connection (via learning sean-nós) to Irish language, music and culture which, for me, is profoundly enriching-and fun! Go raibh mile maith agat!"

Gary from Alabama started the Bitesize Irish Sing a Song in Irish course just last month and that was how he felt about the course after just two weeks!

Join Gary and learn to sing some traditional Irish songs!

Spirit of Doolin

Spirit of Doolin

Flute maestro Michel Bonamy plays his version of a tune called "Come Into Town Fair Lady", a jig he remembers from Micho Russell's playing. He then plays his reel version of the same tune.

We are very happy and proud to have been able to make this video with Michel, as he represents the spirit of the Doolin perfectly. He first came to Doolin in 1979 and learned much of his music from older musicians in the area. He entertained locals and visitors alike with his great music throughout the 80s and 90s and we are dleighted to have him back in Co. Clare.

Special thanks to Michel for doing this video and to the Online Academy of Irish Music and Gus O'Connor's Pub for their support.

👉🏻 Make sure to help spreading the spirit of Doolin by sharing this video 🙏🏻🎶💚

"I went down to Co. Clare at the beginning of March to take a few snaps of Luka Bloom to make a drawing of for this years poster. The first song he sang for me was 'City of Chicago'. I commented that that was the best version of the song i'd ever heard. He replied:"It'd want to be- didn't I write the feckin thing?!" OOPS! Better do more research next time BB! Anyway here's the draft poster for this year's festival. Luka is coming up a day early to open the exhibition of my most recent artpieces at the Abbey Centre. This show is two years in the making. But I think I might've gone a bit offtrack with bigger pictures & even more hidden secrets!? To hear Luka's most famous song, tap into "Luka Bloom-City of Chicago-You Tube" . BB
